The 43rd release of katharsis is the album “Love Language” by the Danish artist icfam. It is evocative like a long makeout session, tongue action specifically. icfam celebrates the long journeys to daydreamy destinations on a record that is romantic and peaceful, yet at times highly energetic.

Through streamlined synthesis and arrangements, icfam produces a composite world of sound that carries a message of love and simplicity. Despite the meticulous care for sound design on this record, the use of intuitive sounds and phrases so simple, sometimes approaches a sort of mindlessness. Building conceptually on sinewaves as the only sound that really exists, the artist develops a nonfragmented illusion through obsession over the harmonic series and melodies within melodies.

Love Language is both reassuring and mystifying, like your favourite lullaby. As well as intoxicatingly painful like exquisite torture. icfam wants to express a special feeling one might get from going to the hospital. A cathartic feeling of being safe and held.

If you’ve fallen from above

Casey MQ - Between Water

Berlin-based events organisers and label Creamcake are pleased to announce their latest online release, Casey MQ's Nudes EP (released September 28)with lead single Between Waters out September 7.

The Canadian singer, songwriter, musician and producer blurs the borders between ambient production and melancholic soul, distorted club music and electronic pop. A classically-trained pianist, Casey has scored original music for a number of films that have screened at TIFF, SXSW and Hot Docs Film Festival, while producing for other artists including Zaki Ibrahim, TiKA and Cadence Weapon.

Most notably, the Toronto-based artist released a collaborative EP with Paris’ oklou called For The Beasts on Parisian label Permalnk in December last year. A reimagining of pop-star vocal samples in mutated form, Casey MQ carries this preoccupation with dance hooks and synth melodies into Nudes. Five singles swagger through the RnB influences of an updated lounge music for the internet era, similar to contemporaries Dan Bodan and serpentwithfeet, while focussing on delicate, sometimes odd, harmonies not unlike anohni. Lead single “Between Waters” is the more epic of the bunch, where a prancing synthline and crisp kick sustains Casey MQ’s luscious voice on an unyielding EDM high.

The “Between Waters” music video and single release precedes the Nudes EP, which drops on September 21, and Casey MQ will be performing 3hd 2018’s “Energies Exchange" night — along with QT, Bob Vylan, and Golin —  at Säule on October 25.

Crystallmess – real name Christelle Oyiri – is a Paris-based artist with a, quite honestly, overwhelming CV. As well as being a composer, DJ and journalist, she is a sound artist as well as a mixed media one, soundtracking Jean Paul Gautier videos and Paris Fashion Week shows for Telfar while doing in-store sound design for the likes of Kenzo, plus contributing installations for the Pompidou Centre. Operating a monthly slot on NTS with her UNLEASHED show, Crystallmess’s DJing style is wildly varied yet unexpectedly cohesive, connecting the dots between wall-quaking warehouse sounds and the latest sounds of rap, creating strong narratives as she goes. One recent show was dedicated to experimental bootlegs, blends, mash-up, “slash ups” and edits of Nicki Minaj tracks. Her own productions, too, are intriguing, and she released a split EP with Toxe on PAN’s white label series in 2019, dropping ‘ISSA REVENGE‘ earlier this year for a compilation that drew together the best of the new French electronic scene. Blending tough French rap, mutant techno and brittle club sounds, Crystallmess’s Dummy Mix takes thrilling and haunting twists and turns. “It’s my first club-oriented mix in months, haven’t stepped foot in [a club] in months so this is the mix of a DJ trying to get their groove back in the midst of the world ending,” she explains. “Welcoming uncertainty and freestyling completely.”
