Memory interlude

Recorded & mixed on 13 Sep 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa. 

Process notes -
Bitwig - I started in Bitwig by pulling four samples from Freesound.org, including the one offered for use with this project. After this, I applied different settings of the Tuner device, very wet, different stretch modes and some limiting before exporting the 4 stems. 

I grabbed my iPad and sat in the cool night air with AudioKit’s Synth One and recorded a few slow takes on the same arpeggio. 

Ableton Live - 
- I pulled in all four of Freesound samples. I warped each one differently, grouped the HDD Sounds together & applied pitch correction in Nectar along with some CHOWTapeModel. I grouped the other two sounds together and applied Corpus on a beam setting.
- I used 6 different pieces of the Synth One recordings, with some filtering applied to some and used Caellum Audio’s Tape Cassette 2 on one of these tracks.
- I pulled three bits of a Max session from 19 Apr 2024 as some icing on this cake, using the same basic Corpus patch as the second Freesound set.
- I mixed it - just went with it

Title - I just liked how the word "orchard" contains the word "hard."

John Roberts' Paloma is one of the most interesting tunes of the collection, a track that confirms the American producer's recent return to an even lusher battery of sounds, drifting more freely towards John Cage'ian shores and melting elements as diverse as nervous guitar vibratos and strings getting distorted in an background orgy of swashing percussions.

One year after Leifur James released his debut album A Louder Silence on 5th October 2018, he returns with a remix EP; also released on Night Times Stories, original artist label of Late Night Tales; home to Texan trio Khruangbin.

The record attracted immediate support from Pitchfork, KEXP, XLR8R, Mixmag 8/10, Future Music UK 9/10, Electronic Sound 9/10.  In April 2019 ‘Wurlitzer’ was the first piece of music he revealed from a new creative period after those sessions. The video was created by animator/director Balázs Simon, premiering on Boiler Room and was nominated for the BMVA Berlin Music Video Awards in the experimental music category, airing at the British Film Institute BFI Southbank London, watch here

The remix EP of the debut album A Louder Silence features a slew of the finest musicians in electronic music today. Bruce coming off the back of his hugely well received debut album for Hessle Audio has a “resymph” of Osho in typical mind-bending austere electronic style. Whities producer and Tirzah/Mica Levi collaborator Coby Sey reconstructs Suns of Gold with his sampler. Blueberry Records founder FaltyDL aka Drew Lustman contributes a deep, skipping 2-stepping reversion of Mumma Don’t Tell. Auntie Flo AKA Brian d’Souza flexes his world-club fusion on a shimmering remix of Salaninam.  And London cellist, composer and Radiohead regular collaborator Oliver Coates reshapes Red Sea into a swirling post-rock noise, leading into a jazz-chamber music outro. 

The 4 most DJ friendly cuts from FaltyDL, Bruce, Coby Sey and Leifur’s own remix will also be released as a highly limited edition 12”. 300 vinyls are being pressed up. In total, it’s a refreshingly diverse and creative collection of new approaches to Leifur’s source material.

Afterthought

"There is no specific theme or thought to this mix, but here’s a little background on this recording. I often study my records to learn the smoothest  entry and exiting points for mixing. I normally handle this process by mixing and experimenting in my basement. Sometimes I record these sessions, this happens to be one of those recordings. Most of the sessions aren’t playable because there’s generally quite a bit of starting and stopping, but this particular recording lasted almost an hour.
