Based in Porto, Portugal, Rave Child is off to an exciting start with the new label and event series, Kokölò. True “to move forward” meaning behind its name, the label ethos focuses on a specific mood or state of freedom rather than a particular genre. 

In the inaugural ‘The Birth’ EP,  no-face-entity Rave Child captured that feeling of a soul discovering the dancefloor for the first time with all its naivety and joy. United in the use of breaks, and chopped voices meld with dreamy melodies, each track on the three-track EP takes on the unique, nostalgia permeated sonic gradient. Mastering by Vril and Andreas Lubich, aka Loop-o, make this package easy not to miss. 

Feel like a kid again on properly induced euphoria aka the album’s opener ‘It never was.’ Daydreaming at the heart of playful lights and colors, beaming to a point of galvanized innocence, getting loose in some utopian infinity; this track lifts spirits and launches moves like nobody watches. Sensei Hanzo (SXDNS065) needs no introduction amid the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. With recent well-received appearances on Melomana, PlayPal, Sonido Moderna, and ODD Pleasures, the owner of the beloved-by-all Belly Dance Services is back on the Mexico-born Spain-based outlet Bonkers with his brand-new endeavour: “Frequent Habits” comes with his characteristic hard-to-pigeonhole mosaic of soundscapes featuring complex percussive elements combined with an acid and rebel attitude. An insightful concoction triggered by his incredible multi-cultural background and fresh influences. On the remix duties, the EP presents none other than master Balam (SXDNS048), the powerful Brazilian duo Moozeic, and Ludviq, the label honcho himself. 

 

If the original of “La Chapelle” supplies the full-pack of Hanzo’s aforementioned “hard-to-pigeonhole mosaic of soundscapes featuring complex percussive elements combined with an acid and rebel attitude”, Moozeic’s interpretation, premiered here, delivers a smoothier and more psychedelic take and brings the theme a shard of House-Music-infused gait.

Duo Lucas Brell and Marvin Uhde deliver six fire-powered percussion tracks to Osàre! Editions. Longtime friends and collaborators, the pair channel a liquid medley of drum menace that flips sideways, swiftly pivoting between 85 and 170 bpm. As disorientating as it is formidable, “Purest State Confusion” offers up a fractal prism of ever-shifting beat patterns – an endlessly warping vortex, where the continuum of jungle and drum and bass fuses with a guttural, tribalist sound.

The titular number, a wormhole techno ordeal, builds steadily, layer upon layer. A crystalline dancefloor pleaser, it subverts classic four-to-the-floor with a delayed kick drum that punctuates every 8th beat. Like black oil diffusing in water, the bass creeps in menacingly to 'The Disappearer', in hard and fast contrast with the sharp fluctuations of the amen break. 

Slamming in mercilessly, 'Channelling Bryn Jones' opens up the B-side, its fluttering rhythms joining together with an infectious klaxon melody before the IDM-stylings of ‘Brain Massage' closes out. Purest State of Confusion was recorded at various locations in Leipzig and Berlin, including at the shed-turned-studio, owned by the bass-focused record label Fast Castle. 

Final touches and mixing assistance were performed by Mike Bierbach AKA rødhåd at the WSNWG studios. The pioneering techno producer inflects the record with his staunch taste for aerobic club rhythmics, teasing out the whirling tempos and pointillistic harmonics.

Optimo affiliate and Night of the Jaguar honcho Mr TC makes a splash on Hard Fist for their first release of 2019 and Khidja has managed to get his hands on the stems starting the year with a bang!
Gay Haze boasts heady live bass and flute are the elements which Khidja have brought out of the awesome original which punctuate the eastern vibe which slowly builds as the faint hiss of vocal haunts the back channels. As the track builds so does the hiss and the echo and the menace and the sense of dread and urgency. 
Andrei Rusu and Florentin Tudor have had an exceptional 2018 as has Thomas Lea Clarke, and this is the dream start to the next year... no time to reflect, no time to make resolutions. Here we go again!
