Bit of a love song (unusual for me). Simple arrangement, just piano with some strings. I enjoyed writing the string parts as a proper string quartet.

Picture this: a garden in the spring;
A father smiles and digs the shovel in.
At first his young son watches
Then finally he clutches
At the spade, so he can form
The mighty duo that produces
The finest sweet tomatoes.
 
For many years the picture stays the same
With just the junior’s height subject to change
Til he moves out and he’s earning
But when the weather’s warming up 
He wants to turn the soil and so
He finds himself returning
To help with those tomatoes.
 
Breaking news: A man aged 42
Sent down for murder that he says he didn’t do.
Now alone dad does the digging
And with every shovel thinking
Of the son who can’t be with him
And he waters them with weeping -
Bitter-sweet tomatoes.
 
Then one day he writes: “My back pain’s so severe
I can’t dig, so no tomatoes here this year.”
Devoted now as ever,
His son returns a letter:
“I hid the bodies in your back yard
So please, I think you’d better
Not dig for your tomatoes.”
 
A pack of wolves with blue lights soon arrives.
The sirens drive the old man’s deaf aid wild.
The media sensation
Say the full blown operation
Found only bones belonging to
A fully grown Alsatian
Who died of natural causes.
 
“Dear dad, forgive the bother.
I hope you soon recover.
That’s the best that I could do from here
To let you have another,
Another year of sweet tomatoes.”
