Berlin based producer and live artist Ben Böhmer has risen through the Anjunadeep ranks to become a breakout star of the past 18 months, amassing almost 40 million streams, picking up BBC Radio 1 support from Annie Mac and Pete Tong, including an ‘Essential New Tune’, and being featured in Billboard’s ‘Ones To Watch’. 

In addition to running his own fledgling label Tön Töpferei, Ben has put out singles on Anjunadeep and acclaimed remixes for Monolink and Jan Blomqvist, both of whom now feature on Ben’s debut LP.

Ben’s early releases on tastemaker labels Bade and Keller drew comparison to revered producers Recondite and Francesco Tristano - dark tracks dotted with classical influence, featuring haunting piano lines and discordant strings. Not long afterwards, Ben lost a close family member, and both his life and his music changed course. 

Whilst overcoming this loss, Ben found solace in music. 

The moody and reflective sounds of Ben’s early work made way for brighter and more melodic music, keeping the depth and texture, but changing the tone from darkness to light. Finding a sense of hope and optimism in uplifting emotions and euphoric melodies, Ben's debut album ‘Breathing’ marks the closing of a chapter in Ben’s life, the culmination of a period of heartache and recovery, and a coming of age as an artist.  

Opening track ‘In Memoriam’ is an emotive tribute, blending powerful strings with stirring vocal samples. Title track and lead single ‘Breathing’ with collaborators Nils Hoffmann and Malou follows. A long-awaited highlight in Ben’s live shows over the past year, 'Breathing' layers Malou’s delicate voice above swung percussion and hard-hitting synths.

An avid collaborator, Ben is also joined on the album by two further breakout German stars, vocalist Monolink who features on ‘Black Hole’ and multi-instrumentalist Jan Blomqvist who lends his vocals to ‘Decade’. 

Through the album Ben explores a range of emotions, from the hopeful ‘Hunting’ with Jonah, to energetic instrumental ‘Maelstrom’ through to the hard-hitting ‘Wall Of Strings, which samples The Cinematic Orchestra. 

Following the release of the album in November, Ben will be taking his live show on an extensive world tour - dates and information to be revealed in the coming months.

‘Breathing’ is available to pre-order now, digitally, on CD and on limited edition 2x12” white vinyl, due for release 22 November 2019.

Anjunabeats, the iconic record label founded in the year 2000 by Above & Beyond, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, Jono, Tony and Paavo today unveil the 15th release in the celebrated ‘Volume’ series.

Crafted by Above & Beyond in their London studio during lockdown, Anjunabeats Volume 15 signals the direction this label is heading in. 

“The rug has been pulled from under us all as we battle this unprecedented global situation. From isolation comes motivation, however, and it’s time to revisit a trusted friend: the Anjunabeats Volume series.” - Above & Beyond

Names both fresh and familiar to Anjunabeats fans - over 30 artists in total - have been included in the mix. 

Volume debutants include Jordin Post, Le Youth, and gardenstate (a new project from Marcus Schössow and Matthew Felner) are joined by label stalwarts Andrew Bayer, Genix, Gabriel & Dresden, Oliver Smith, Mat Zo, Jason Ross, Tinlicker, Sunny Lax and, of course, Above & Beyond.

Disc one, a deeper, progressive mix, features a selection of exciting Anjunadeep talent on display: Marsh, Qrion, Durante & HANA, Frost and PROFF. The mix builds up to disc two, where Above & Beyond takes full flight.

Disc two has no less than six Above & Beyond contributions, including three new club instrumentals: “I Saw Good”, “Jam” and “Crash”. There are two Volume 15 exclusive remixes of Above & Beyond’s staples: “Oceanic”, remixed by Germany’s Jerome, and “Sun In Your Eyes”, remixed by Sunny Lax. 

Some formidable collaborations have been turned in from Andrew Bayer - who teams up on tracks with both Genix and Cosmic Gate - Grum and Genix and Spencer Brown and ALPHA 9. Trance music’s answer to the power trio, Elysian (ilan Bluestone, Maor Levi and Emma Hewitt) also make an appearance.

Spencer Brown & Artem Stolyarov (aka Arty / ALPHA 9) unveil their new collaborative EP, ‘Ariel / Afterlife’.

Debuted during Spencer’s set at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 350 celebrations in Prague, this is the second time Spencer and Artem have joined forces, ‘No Going Back’ from 2018. ‘Ariel’ also featured on ‘Anjunabeats Volume 15’, mixed by Above & Beyond.

Spencer has, quietly, had one of his most prolific years to date: he released a full artist album in January, followed by two companion EPs, a collaboration with fellow San Franciscan Qrion and co-produced the title track of Ben Bohmer’s ‘Phases’ EP.  Spencer recently hosted a charity livestream in San Francisco that raised over $8000 for the family of SB-fan Greg Cohen and the Sarcoma Foundation.

Meanwhile, Arty’s ALPHA 9 project has gone from strength to strength in 2020. He’s released a string of singles on Anjunabeats across the summer and contributed no less than three tracks to Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 15 compilation album. 

We’re excited to say there is much, much more in the pipeline from ALPHA 9 to come this year.
