If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking

"Rocket Summer" was inspired by the short story of the same name by American science fiction author, Ray Bradbury. Found in his collection of stories, The Martian Chronicles, this vignette portrays a rocket launch
carrying the first colonizing humans to Mars. As it readies to lift off (billowing clouds of exhaust and heat), the rocket creates some fantastic environmental repercussions for the winter-hardened citizens of a nearby Ohioan township... Growing up in cold Manitoba with cold Ohioan-like winters, I could only imagine the lush reprieve described by Bradbury in his story. The story takes perhaps a minute to read, but the lasting effect of the vivid images and warming words left quite an impact on me.

The piece is also inspired by Gustav Holst's symphonic masterpiece, The Planets. Embedded through this short fanfare are snippets of his music written for "Mars" and "Jupiter". Careful attention was paid to percussion,
with sparse/open scoring of keyboard instruments depicting a harsh and bare landscape, while drums, cymbals, and tam tam create the sense of warm waves in a "sea of hot air".

This fanfare is warmly dedicated to my friend and mentor, Dr. Wendy McCallum - who continually encourages all of her students to keep looking up.

Come To Me

'They Desire a Better Country' is the second movement of a larger orchestral piece commissioned by the Brandon Community Orchestra for Canada's 150th anniversary of confederation. It is arranged here for wind symphony.

The title of the movement is taken from the Order of Canada ('Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam') found on the Canadian coat of arms. The music in this movement could be described as 'orchestral pop/folk': it is yearning, hopeful, rhythmic, nomadically shifting, and teeming with life, all the while paying homage to the form and melody of Stan Roger's "Northwest Passage" - one of the unofficial national anthems of Canada.
