Excerpts from WHERE THE HEART IS

From the composer: Miniatures for One developed out of a communal need for interaction and a personal need for process. I gave myself sixty minutes to write and engrave one 20-40 second miniature for solo performer each day, later moving to two per day. The works are loosely based around the performer’s favorite dessert, with that influence ranging from tangential reference to the central elements of the work’s form and text. The self-imposed time and duration restrictions necessitated putting aside my eccentricities and fixations, letting go of the things I cannot immediately resolve or control, and asking myself to create within an imperfect environment.

100% of the proceeds from sales of the score - both digital and physical - will be going to New Music USA's New Music Solidarity Fund, an artist-led initiative that aims to grant emergency funding to musicians impacted by COVID-19. 

#54 is for organist Jim Roman of Houston, Texas whose beverage choice is an Arnold Palmer.

This was recorded with the Hereford Cathedral organ (UK) sample set by Lavender Audio using the Hauptwerk VPO software.

Miniature for One No. 53 - Matthew Kennedy

Matthew Kennedy’s music contains disarming clarity and simplicity, often seeking out dark places with an uninhibited wonder and spirit of exploration. His work has received critical acclaim including honors and commissions from ASCAP, BMI, Society of Composers Inc, Hartford Opera Theater, Dynamic Music Festival at NYU, Foot-in-the-Door Ensemble, bassist Robert Black, as well as residencies at Crosshatch Center for Art and Ecology (MI), Horned Dorset Artist Colony (NY),  Marble House Project (VT), and the Mayapple Center for the Arts and Humanities (CT). Recent activities include performances at Fresh Inc. Festival, University of Nebraska-Kearney New Music Festival, Northwestern University New Music Conference, and SCI Regional Conferences. Matthew is currently on faculty at the University of South Florida, where he teaches Composition and Music Theory. He and his wife, studio artist Erin Kennedy currently reside in Tampa, FL with their three children.
