Thina Records’ first release of 2019 comes from South African producer T. Siza. Consisting of 3 original productions by the young producer and a lovely rework from label boss Mculo, Thina records follows up their debut release with yet another strong record. Featuring prime cuts of club-ready acid-tinged techno rollers, to laid-back deep house and sweet spots in between, T. Siza caters to the club-goer, the home-listener, peak-hour dancefloor or the hazy warmup alike. 

Our personal favourite and today’s premiere is of the latter kind. With its swung hi-hats, bouncing congas, groovy bass, and the vocal talents of Alan Portable, ’Don’t You Let Them Know’ sounds like something straight out the Canadian riviera. Hazy, open hi-hats drift up and down and lush synths flow through the air like a summer breeze, as all I can do is dream of a distant summer day party. With his sun-kissed production, T. Siza reminds us it’s still summer in South Africa and inspires the rest of us on this side of the equator to dream of summer days to come. 

Definitely a must-have record for all the dancers and dreamers, this inspiring EP from the young Thina Records label and new-comer T. Siza promises great things to come of both. Out on the 1st of March, preorder the High Fashion EP.

The four tracks on this EP represent a bit of a transitional phase for Louis Jaquet (aka Kid Who), marking a move from a basic setup with an MPC2000XL sampler and a computer to a fully-fledged hardware studio. The initial versions of these tracks were quick jams that he had made early on in this change, but which had lay dormant on his hard drive for some time, before being revisited and reworked for this release with the new equipment.
One of Kid Who's early purchases was a cheap old Yamaha multitrack cassette recorder, which presents many opportunities for sound manipulation. Different tape speeds, tape types and manual manipulation during playback open up a world of noisy, woozy atmospheres, some of which formed the basis of 'Spool Night'.

This time the record label welcomes Nantes-based So Many Men, who has previously released work under the Digital Romance, Forgotten Illusions, The Outrunners monikers. Two heavy-fueled electro anthems with a strong leaning towards the cosmic side of synth work. Good stuff!

The luxurious venue was busy with some of the most famous, pretty faces in the ecletic world of art. Red linen curtains hung atop the windows, concealing the darkness outside and blurring the lines between night and day. Candles flickered softly upon each table and guests talked in hushed voices and fancy masks. It was a somewhat strange affair, a distinctly erotic mood but with a poignant hint of sadness. Incense burned with a musky warmth and there was a stale scent which hung in the air. The party was alive with wrong'uns. 

Niv Ast is set to release a new EP on London based label Snap, Crackle & Pop - the longstanding party series has become a firm favourite in the capital. The EP features a remix from Mr TC, a fierce talent who has released previously on the likes of Optimo Music, Neubau and Hard Fist.

DoctorSoul is one of the hottest Parisian Disco & Soul producers, who releases his music a.o. on Yam Who?’s überhip Disco Label MIDNIGHT RIOT RECORDS from London. His releases often reach the Disco DownLoad Charts, he just reached No 1 in the Traxsource charts with “Secret Friend”. He has his own unique production style, which is always on the dubby side if things, but still very poppy and true to the original. A difficult balance, that he masters like not many others.  One of the reasons for this special sound might be the fact that he was born and raised in West Africa. Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States’ urban nightlife scene. Its sound is typified by four-on-the-floor beats, syncopated basslines, string sections, horns, electric piano, synthesizers, and electric rhythm guitars.

Well-known disco artists include Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, the Bee Gees, Chic, KC and the Sunshine Band, Thelma Houston, Sister Sledge, The Trammps, the Village People and Michael Jackson. While performers and singers garnered public attention, record producers working behind the scenes played an important role in developing the genre. Films such as Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Thank God It's Friday (1978) contributed to disco's mainstream popularity.

Disco started as a mixture of music from venues popular with African Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Italian Americans, and LGBT people in Philadelphia and New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco can be seen as a reaction by the 1960's counterculture to both the dominance of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music at the time. Several dance styles were developed during the period of disco's popularity in the United States, including “the Bump” and “the Hustle”.

By the late 1970s, most major U.S. cities had thriving disco club scenes, and DJs would mix dance records at clubs such as Studio 54 in New York City, a venue popular among celebrities. Discothèque-goers often wore expensive, extravagant and sexy fashions. There was also a thriving drug subculture in the disco scene, particularly for drugs that would enhance the experience of dancing to the loud music and the flashing lights, such as cocaine and Quaaludes, the latter being so common in disco subculture that they were nicknamed "disco biscuits". Disco clubs were also associated with promiscuity as a reflection of the sexual revolution of this era in popular history.

Disco was the last popular music movement driven by the baby boom generation. It declined as a major trend in popular music during the late 1970s. However, it was a key influence in the development of electronic dance music, house music, hip-hop, new wave and post-disco. While no new disco movement has dominated popular music since its decline, the style has had several revivals and the influence of disco remains strong across American and European pop music.
