Music From The Soul 001 - BobaFatt

With two critically acclaimed compilations already under his belt, DJ / collector miche returns to Mr Bongo with the third instalment of his With Love series. Testament to his ever-expanding taste, Volume 3 casts the net deeper and wider than before. The first single from the compilation comes courtesy of John Simmons with his feel-good modern soul anthem, ‘Ain’t Nothing Like The Love’.

A sought-after 1981 rarity, this nugget of modern soul stepper gold, was the only release on Michigan’s Sabrina Records. Originally written by Simmons, Phillip Ballou and David Nathan in 1978, the song was supposed to be part of Ballou’s a proposed solo record deal that never materialised. Simmons, who was a member of The Reflections and later went on to become musical director for Stephanie Mills and Whitney Houston, then recorded his own version for the tiny independent label Sabrina in ’81.  

Subsequent versions of the song by Philip Ballou and David Nathan have been released digitally; Simmons’ original recording is making its debut appearance with this compilation. It’s a deep cut dripping in early boogie, synthesised swagger, gospel-tinged soul vocals and a heavy dose of uplifting energy.

As miche mentions, “This is pure hands-in-the-air business that’s guaranteed to make the dancefloor smile. I’ve adored this track ever since Zaf Love Vinyl played it about 6 or 7 years ago. Big love to Russell Paine for helping me get this one over the line.”

With original’s trading hands for £1000+, this remastered reissue as part of With Love 3 will be a welcome sight to many.


Ain't Nothing Like the Love

Hello friends,

This Thursday, August 14th, I’m back at my summer residency at La Milagrosa in South Williamsburg - a tiny speakeasy with just enough space for the music to wrap around us. I’ll be joined by some of my friends behind the decks, and we’ll play from 10PM until the night decides to end.
Milagrosa is one of those rooms where you feel every record. A handful of people, close enough to exchange smiles, close enough to hear the air between the notes.

I’ve been DJ-ing for over 25 years, collecting music from all corners of the world - each track carrying its own story, its own heartbeat. On Thursdays, I get to stitch these moments together: fresh discoveries, long-lost gems, and sounds that still give me goosebumps after decades. No hype, no big expectations, just a night for those who love music, connection, and the beauty of getting lost in a groove.

And here’s a little taste - I recorded my Sunday set at @Brooklynpopup at @Brooklynmuseum. Think of it as a warm-up for what’s coming this Thursday.

Rustam Ospanoff - Steps Ahead

It feels quite surreal to say this, but Episode 03 of the Balearic London mix series is brought by none other than Italo house legend Don Carlos. Starting his DJ career in the late 70s, he is best known for his production debut 'Alone'. Widely known as the epitome of what dream house is, the track combines emotive piano chords, crisp percussion, and ethereal pads in what is beautifully floaty yet perfectly punchy perfection. Since then he's released more underground hits under his own name as well as his Montego Bay and Aquanauts monikers. He isn't just a legend of the 90s though, his releases in the recent years on Freerange Records, Utopia, Irma Records, and remixes on Wolf Music and more show that his music sounds as fresh now as ever.

One of the hottest newcomers to land on the shores of the House scene, DJ/producer Ant LaRock is making quite a bit of noise, yet noise is the last word that could ever describe his productions. His debut single, "Sanctuary" on Dopewax, has got some seriously deep grooves, gummy bassline, percolating synth and the almighty 4/4 percussion accented by a strong rim click. The track's genius production lies in its simplicity. Weaving so smoothly throughout is the amazingly seductive and dynamic vocal of Agency, also a new artist whose overall performance on this single is truly other-worldly. The triumphant return of east coast dynamo Ant LaRock and vocal partner Zhao takes the form of a sweet sweet soulful jam. Not an ounce of pure boogie is lost on Ant's Main mixes whose energy is ramped up a bit on his effective rolling percussion and snappy tight tight Nitelife remixes. On additional remix duty comes South African producer Karyendasoul who dives in a bit darker and deeper on his Orchid versions. All the while Zhao's candy-coated vocal injects addictive verses that will remain on the brain. Lots of dance variation offered here from disco funky to bigger energy club to heady deep tribal.
