i don't really know what this is. some kind of experiment from 3 years ago that i decided failed. but i don't know what i was trying to do -- seems to be an attempt to impose a little bit of tonality on some construction noises (probably scraping a paved path). anyway i like it now.

one knob changes the tuning (equal divisions of an octave), one changes the position in the scale. idk what the musical possibilities might be here yet (if anything). 

a note is played with frequency f*2^(p/n), where n is the division of the octave and p is a position in the octave (actually allowed to range up to 2n-1). a heard change in note can result from changing either p or n. changes in p result in expected intervals; changes in n sound a bit weird.

one obstacle is that moving in (1/n) steps (e.g., chromatically in the twelve-tone scale) doesn't usually sound melodic unless n is small. so it would be natural to define a scale, a privileged subset of [0, n-1] that notes are drawn from. you could probably just choose randomly and it might sound good but i haven't done that yet and have to go to bed. (here i just make each note change a small random hop among the equal divisions of the octave.)

I tried to figure out if this was like a preset and afaict it's not, the sample doesn't even seem to have been there already. So apparently what happened is the device fell to the floor, recorded a sample of the "thud" it made, and then zoomed in on the loud part and set the in-/out-points so that it loops over the peaks fast enough to make what sound like pure tones.
