Cursed Objects: The Conjured Chest

This Kentucky history moment is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society, commemorating America’s 250th.
In February 1863, Martha Doram appeared before the Boyle County Clerk and requested a certificate of freedom, or Freedom Papers. Though this document could be easily lost, taken or rejected as counterfeit, it was her only proof of freedom from enslavement if she was questioned. 

Martha’s story is not typical of the African American experience in Kentucky during the Civil War. Her parents were wealthy and free business and landowners of color, Denis and Diadamia Doram. While free from enslavement, they still had to deal with prejudice and struggles to live during this time.
