Following on from releases with Quilotoa and first solo E.P, Move 37, KEPLR returns in 2022 with Lateral Eye Movement, the first of four singles which comprise the Move 78 E.P.

A sparse and atmospheric intro develops rhythmically with flurries of 808 percussion and tribal drum samples. This is accompanied by an emotive vocal, melodic piano and ethereal found sounds.

In this song, KEPLR explores memory, place, nostalgia and how, if we indulge too much, they can define not just our past, but our present and future “a bittersweet mercenary, holding memory to ransom”. KEPLR notes that ‘"the lyrics were originally a short story I wrote whilst living in London and experiencing loss. I’ve re-worked them several times and this is the latest rendition. No doubt I will revisit them again as I feel the past is sewn into our souls, and it seems I’ve not been great at following my own advice! For now, I’m happy with how they sit in this song and I can move on from this period with some sense of catharsis".

Lateral Eye Movement

The second single and title track of KEPLR’s forthcoming E.P, Move 78 is a response to last year’s Move 37 release. An instrumental track which builds atmospherically before a percussive drop, comprising found sounds and a splintering organ. Choruses of ebowed guitars and basses give this song a human feel amongst it’s calculated electronic body.

As with Move 37, for this song KEPLR was exploring philosophical ideas about technology and AI. “Move 78 is a retort to Move 37. As well as reading ‘Homo Deus’ and ‘Life 3.0’ I was captivated by the AlphaGo documentary. Move 78 is an attempt to recreate Lee Sedol’s calculated response to the AI’s ‘Move 37’. Although mathematical and measured, it was a high risk strategy which, on that occasion, prevailed. I felt this represented defiance, in the face of digital ascension which seems somewhat inevitable.”

The quality of our guest mix series remains unbroken with the 3rd session coming courtesy of Andrew Weatherall who has had numerous appearances at our No Strings Attached club nights since the early years.  He always amazes us with the way he manages to capture the full attention of the club during his sets, pushing and challenging the crowd with his avant-garde performances. The long standing relationship continues when he returns next month with fellow slomo cosmic warrior Sean Johnston and this mix gives you a perfect taste of the ALFOS sound.
