World Cup is now underway. Brasil's first game is Thursday. I don't enjoy the WC. For me, it's a month of suffering that only ends well if Brasil lifts the cup at the end. I've been fortunate enough to experience that twice in my lifetime (94 and 02). The other WCs have lead to heartbreak and depression for a few days. Brasil is a favorite to win every WC per usual. However, being a favorite and lifting the copa are two different things.

This isn't a WC mix, but there are drops from the 70 WC because Brasil 70 is considered the greatest team ever. Mix is actually inspired by Quasimoto. With Adventures of Quas; Madlib basically made an album mixing his favorite things; records, Sun Ra, and Melvin Van Pebbles. I took the same basic elements and added my favorite thing; Brasil futbol. After almost 2 decades of deliberation and painfully listening to "textbook" "Aussie" mixes from DJ's who aren't DJs and rappers & diggeurs who were suddenly DJs, I decided it was time I delved into the world famous Bulletproof Crates and specifically into the Aussie section to let heads know what's really up in the Antipodean crates when it comes to diggin' from a beat head perspective.

Here's 53 minutes of heavy hittin' top tier jazz, funk, soul, disco, drum breaks, post punk, electronics and some face meltin' cover versions. All cut up live in one take, by an actual DJ; break mix style with turntablist skills, on 2 turntables at the Bulletproof Lab in Brisbane on August 30th 2017.

Shouts to Giles Peterson and Mike Who for premiering the mix on Worldwide FM and a courteous fuck you to all the bullshit "labels" and record stores reissuing stuff that Aussie diggaz been diggin' before it was a #hashtag — dig under the radar and stop instagram vinyl circle jerkin' each other off — in the timeless words of DJ Premier, "ya'll are violating straight up and down".

One of my early mixtapes.  This was done in 1996 for Fat Beats to sell in the store.  I did it 100% live, which meant that any time I messed up making it I had to go back and start over.  I only had one Technics 1200 at the time, and one crappy belt drive. To my ears now it's full of rough transitions, weird tempo changes, and off beat cuts... But it worked at the time, and was my entré to radio in NYC when G-Man and J-Smooth of the Underground Railroad radio show heard it and invited me up to spin. All original vinyl on a breaks and beats concept.  Hope you enjoy this artifact!

Kerbside Collection - are an all instrumental jazz funk and rare groove ensemble from the inner suburbs of Brisbane/QLD/Australia.
The band plays raw jazzfunk and traditional dusty rare groove for listening or dancing.

‘A gritty rhythm section of old school drums and fender or upright bass, alongside funky hammond and rhodes, with some sweet George Benson-ish jazz guitar licks on top.’

The sound harks back to the 60’s and 70’s Californian West Coast jazzfunk music of artists such as Wes Montgomery and George Benson, whilst tipping its hat to some of today’s contemporaries (Soulive, Eddie Roberts & the New Mastersounds, Cookin on 3 Burners, Mattson 2, Frootful etc).
