If STRGTHS offered a taste of the Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH’s sense of humour and willingness to actively resist order, Linear S Decoded see them in full control. 

The complex, onomatopoeic track titles are gone and replaced with more recognisable words and expressions, as though the pair - having strayed dangerously close to parody have decided to reign it in, declaring we make the rules round here. 

And they do. 

Whilst many of the textures on the album can be cross checked against celebrated European Techno of yore, it’s the unapologetic nature of SHXCXCHCXSH’s composition that marks it out against the rest. And it’s a development - where STRNGTHS might have opted for simply another cavernous kick drum, there are hooks here (see This Hmming Raverie), and bonafide musical pieces (see Monolithic Conclusion). Where others might feel ashamed that such uplifting and tonally pleasing sounds are coming out of their machines - SHXCXCHCXSH revel in this fact, warping and bending these sounds unashamedly to craft a truly singular Techno album.

A Cornish ex-pat who now resides in south London, Kieran Whitefield is the man who puts the dark in Poldark, combining a warm persona with a deadly serious attitude to his music. Consistently changing his sound as new equipment and techniques are utilised in his studio the album mixes up the type of 5am club rippers he is known for with an exploration of more spacious and atmospheric tracks.

As we continue Soma’s 25 year anniversary, it’s only fitting label heads Slam receive the remix treatment next. The duo have selected 4 of their favourite acts who have given some Slam classics the modern day rework. 

Polegroup’s Oscar Mulero, a true veteran of the techno scene, turns in a suitably whipping remix of the monstrous Stepback. Creating a percussive storm, abating only to unleash those well known vocals. French maestro Antigone turns his hands to Slam’s career defining Positive Education, delving into more funk based territory whilst retaining his unique production style. Eterna, taken from SOMA001 back in 1991 is up next receiving two very individual reworks. Firstly, a drum jack from Inland utilises the originals beautiful pads to great effect and Soma artist Petrichor delivers a more organic, deep affair.

 Schacke transmits a 4 track EP of erotically charged techno, pulsing with soundscapes & textures that evoke at once both the interior of the body and the inner workings of the universe’s hive-mind, vocal samples haze into orgy, sweeping walls of noise are punctuated by trance-influenced melodies, buoyed by a rhythm track that is as playful as it is relentless. 
Schacke has been a pivotal figure for the current Copenhagen techno scene, having run the Moral Defeat label from the underground hub that is Mayhem, his roots in punk and noise music define an energy and intrigue to his production that is singular.

Hot on the heels of the Floorplan v Mark Broom double-header on EPM, Robert Hood is back in full minimal techno mode. ‘Reflector / Rotate’ administers the techno antidote to Hood’s house alias as his no nonsense stripped down aesthetic gradually reveals layers and textures of tension and soul within his machine funk ethos. 

‘Reflector’ picks up from the peak-time driving pulse as shown throughout his ‘Paradigm Shift’ project on Dekmantel giving plenty of big room punch just when needed. Euphoric synths and key changes add to Hood’s usual minimal palate, adding a few goose bumps moments on the way.

‘Rotate’ pairs this back to basics as a solid beat gives way to muted keys and subtle atmospherics, throwing a deeper shadow across the dancefloor. Less is definitely more here.

To celebrate the new EP Robert will be playing a special ‘Internal Empire’ influenced DJ set, marking the album’s 25th anniversary re-issue on Tresor as Boiler Room mark their first ever show in Maastricht on 22 March. He will be joined by Dutch DJ, Pasiphae on the night before later headlining @ Muziekgieterij for the sold out Linke Soto x M-Plant party alongside Motor City Drum Ensemble and Oliver Way.

Dutch duo Artefakt launch their own imprint entitled De Stijl this February, initially with their own ‘Far and Wide EP’ with follow up appearances from Rhine and Cyspe. The imprint delivers a fertile ground for further exploration of their sound, as well as providing a home to affiliated projects and close friends.

‘Far and Wide’ opens up with pitter-patter drums whilst soaring pads join scintillating synths and a medley of subtle effects. With its rumbling percussion, murky bass and tantalising melody, ‘Ghost in the Machine’ takes things into darker territories before ‘Crystal Confessions’ employs a hypnotising aesthetic built on a syncopated rhythm and heavenly chords. Finally, the electro inspired ‘Levity’ concludes matters with a meandering bassline and wistful sequences.
