In this episode, I talked with Dr. Lauren Murphy, a post-doctoral fellow in our Center for Spinal Cord injury Research and Center for Outcomes and Assessment Research. Dr. Murphy’s current research evaluates barriers to preventive medical care for people with spinal cord injuries and is supported by a fellowship from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.

In this episode, I talked with Jamil Williams, a research assistant in our Center for Spinal Cord Injury Research. Jamil’s first connection to the Foundation was as a participant in spinal cord injury research studies. That experience motivated him to pursue a career at the Foundation. Jamil achieved his goal and recently celebrated his one-year work anniversary as a research assistant. He is a ‘people person’ who enjoys sharing his experiences as a person with a disability and motivating others to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injury by volunteering to participate in our research studies.

Jamil Williams learns more about his disability while contributing to spinal cord injury research

In this episode, I talked with Melvin Mejia, a Research Engineer in our Center for Mobility and Rehabilitation Engineering Research. Since 2015, Melvin has been collecting and analyzing movement data for studies of adults with physical disabilities caused by traumatic brain injury, stroke, and osteoarthritis, and children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. He finds working on multiple studies simultaneously challenging, but credits teamwork with enabling him to balance his time to ensure collection of quality data. Fluent in Spanish, he also helps translate for Spanish-speaking participants. He finds engaging with participants on common interests, whether sports or musical genres, enriches the research experience for him and the volunteers. In the future, Melvin is interested in expanding his involvement in research in physical rehabilitation and mobility into rehabilitation for sports injuries.

What is spatial neglect? 
Patients who have had a stroke or traumatic brain injury may have a neurological syndrome called spatial neglect, which affects their ability to pay attention to their surroundings and body parts on the less affected side (the left side for patients with right brain injury). Spatial neglect is disabling. Patients may 'forget' to shave, groom, or dress the left side of their bodies. What is KF-NAP®? 
Kessler Foundation Neglect Assessment Process (KF-NAP®) is an assessment tool that may help clinicians detect the presence of spatial neglect and measure the severity of the syndrome. 

What is KF-PAT®? Kessler Foundation Prism Adaptation Treatment (KF-PAT®) is implemented in occupational therapy for post-stroke spatial neglect. Including prism adaptation treatment in standard of care for patients with post-stroke spatial neglect improved functional and cognitive outcomes. 

What is MRI contrast 
There are two major types of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans: with contrast and non-contrast. The main distinction is that for contrast MRIs, a dye (gadolinium-based) is given to the patient intravenously before the scan. Contrast is often order by a physician who wants to highlight a particular part of the body. 

What is HIPPA? 
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. In this episode, “accidental” abstract expressionist painter Alder Crocker, shares his personal story as a brain and spinal cord injury survivor with acquired savant syndrome. He is a tetraplegic that miraculously has the ability to paint. While his shoulders and arms have range of motion, he has no movement in his fingers. Together, these non-traditional faculties define the artist’s unique techniques and style. Jean Lengenfelder, PhD, assistant director of Center for Traumatic Brain Injury at Kessler Foundation, welcomes and introduces Mr. Crocker.

In this episode, Jacqueline (Jackie) Leddy, a research assistant in our Centers for Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Research and Traumatic Brain Injury Research was interviewed by Joan Banks-Smith, Creative Producer for Kessler Foundation. Jackie discusses how she and fellow team members are motivated by their efforts, which could change people’s lives for the better, and how working at Kessler Foundation has provided her with a chance to learn, grow and explore how clinical trials are done.  

She has been instrumental in transitioning recruitment and operation of a traumatic brain injury clinical trial from onsite to completely virtual over the past 18 months. This clinical trial focuses on facial affect recognition and emotional processing for children from age nine to seventeen. The revamped recruiting process has opened the door to a wider range of participants, going from local to a global mix.

This research helps individuals recovering from stroke and brain injury walk again. It also explores how intensive robotic therapy can drive lasting brain changes, potentially redefining recovery protocols for millions. Led by Karen J. Nolan, PhD, associate director in the Center for Mobility and Rehabilitation Engineering Research, our scientists are investigating how wearable robotics can restore mobility and independence. How Robotics Are Changing Stroke Rehab

In this episode of the Estabrook Distinguished Research Scientist Lectureship series, Dr. Karen Minassian from the Medical University of Vienna shares groundbreaking research on transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS). This non-invasive method uses surface electrodes to activate spinal circuits and induce coordinated leg movements in chronic spinal injury patients. Stemming from accidental observations during epidural studies, his work combines computational modeling and clinical research to show how spinal anatomy and pulse duration affect tSCS effectiveness. Now FDA-approved, this approach offers new hope for neurorehabilitation by enhancing spinal function without surgery. Restoring Connection: How Noninvasive Stimulation Helps the Spinal Cord Relearn

A proven cognitive training program is being adapted and tested in new ways at Kessler Foundation. Led by Dr. Nancy Chiaravalloti, the study explores the Kessler Foundation modified Story Memory Technique (KF-mSMT®️), which helps adults aged 60 and older improve memory and daily functioning. Improving Workplace Communication for Autistic Adults

Anthony H. Lequerica, PhD brings deep expertise and heart to his work at Kessler Foundation’s Center for Traumatic Brain Injury Research. As a Senior Research Scientist and staff neuropsychologist at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, he’s on the front lines of advancing care for individuals recovering from brain injury.

Exercise Benefits Cognition After Brain Injury

People with progressive multiple sclerosis often experience slowed cognitive processing speed. Researchers from Kessler Foundation analyzed data from the international CogEx trial, involving over 300 participants using brain training and exercise over 12 weeks. They found that improvement in cognitive speed varied, with better memory and higher pre-symptom IQ predicting greater gains. Factors like age, gender, or disability status did not affect outcomes. These findings highlight the need for personalized rehabilitation tailored to individuals’ cognitive profiles, moving beyond one-size-fits-all treatments.

Opinion: Why Cognitive Care in MS Needs a Team Approach

In this episode, we discuss research  exploring how storytelling and mental imagery techniques can improve memory in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or normal aging. A 5-week study with 30 participants showed that specialized memory training led to significant improvements in lab-based tests and everyday recollections. 

These findings suggest non-pharmacological strategies could help older adults maintain mental sharpness and independence. We also explore whether this training could delay dementia and the benefits of earlier intervention.

Kessler Foundation President and CEO Rodger DeRose explores how rehabilitation research is redefining recovery after injury and illness. Across the series, DeRose emphasizes how combining neuromodulation, regenerative strategies, and robotic technologies is transforming rehabilitation and quality of life. From wearable and implantable stimulation systems to robotic devices that support walking, upper-limb function, and brain health, these studies point toward a future in which recovery is more personalized, accessible, and effective. The series also underscores the importance of participation, collaboration, and philanthropy in accelerating discoveries that help people with disabilities live and work more independently.

Reimagining Recovery: Rodger DeRose on Breakthrough Rehabilitation

When Cheryl Green sustained a traumatic brain injury, her life was reduced to timelines, symptoms, and explanations of how she got hurt. None of it captured who she actually was. Looking for a way out of the medical shorthand that followed her everywhere, Cheryl found an unexpected tool: comedy films. 

As an independent access artist and TBI survivor, she discovered that creative storytelling could express the emotional truth of her experience in ways clinical language never could. She ended up inviting connection instead of pity.

Through projects like Cooking with Brain Injury and the feature documentary Who Am I to Stop It?, Cheryl centers disabled voices on their own terms. The film follows TBI survivors Brandon, Danny, and Chris, not through diagnoses or expert commentary, but through poetry, performance, and visual art. With no doctors or family members weighing in, the documentary asks viewers: why should external judgment ever decide whether someone gets to pursue their dreams?

Who Am I To Stop It_Letting Your Personal Story Shine Through Art

In an interview with Radio LoRa Switzerland, Dr. Trevor Dyson-Hudson spoke about aging with spinal-cord injury, later onset, and the chronic pain and other conditions and injuries that could develop as a result.

Dr. Dyson-Hudson discussed why aging with spinal-cord injury has become a central clinical and research priority. He mentioned that the average age of people with spinal cord injury onset has increased from 29 years in the 1970s to 44 years in the current decade. We are seeing a higher percentage of older cases now."

Exploring Breakthroughs in Brain Injury Recovery

COVID-19 Edition, Episode 9

Welcome to this COVID-19 special edition podcast brought to you by Kessler Foundation.

In this episode, Carolann Murphy, PA, interviews Dr. Jeanne Zanca, senior research scientist in the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Research, and co-investigator for the Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury Model Sysytem.  Dr. Zanca also serves as associate editor for the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, and is a fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) and a member of the ACRM Board of Governors. Dr. Zanca describes the development of a web-based curriculum for training personal care assistants in the type of care needed by individuals with spinal cord injury. This project update is relevant to our recent experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has placed new emphasis on health care workers and on the advantages of online education. As director of this project, Dr. Zanca shares her perspective on how its utilization can improve quality of life, as well as the personal assistance received by people living with spinal cord injury.

This project is a collaboration of Kessler Foundation and Shepherd Center.
