Kev Obrien - Oct 2021 Mix

The <3onMySleeve Mix Series gets a long-overdue addition. As always, the sets in this series are all inspired solely on my life experiences. This was recorded in Berlin, on one of my final days in the city before returning to Brooklyn. After an amazing 3 month journey, all the dust cleared and I was there alone for the last week of the trip. I recorded the set on a typically cold and rainy Berlin day and this was the result. 

In my opinion, its quite an eclectic set which I really reached deep from within my heart and soul for as the set progressed, as can be heard by appearances from early Nine Inch Nails, to Moby; and classics such as Carl Craig's epic remix of "Tides". Lots of new music as well including cuts from Robag Wruhme, Dixon, Jimpster, Tom Demac, Marek Hemmann, Pachenga Boys and more.

Here is a new set I've compiled-- inspired by the frigid New York November air. Includes some of my favorites from my collection and is mostly comprised of Warm and fuzzy sounding electronica, downtempo, deep house and even a little indie-pop record sprinkled in for good measure, to help keep you all warm as the temperature falls.

Welcome to the world of Vek Neirbo. It's 6am in a basement filled with sweaty dancers. The room is completely dark, only lit by a faint red glow from lcd lights around the perimeter. Cigarette smoke and fog fill the room, while a massive Danley sound system pulsates eccentric and bass-heavy grooves through your body. You suddenly realize that the microdose of mushrooms you took earlier may not have been micro at all, as the moving human bodies surrounding you suddenly transform into dancing entities of light and love.

The sun begins creeping through the basement windows slowly as the music shifts with the energetic pulses of the sun slowly peaking it's light into a degenerate playground.

Is the party over? Hell no, it's only just begun.

Sweet sunshine! Here's my first exploration into the world of liquid drum and bass, with this 90-minute journey through jazzy, soulful, dubby, summery feeling drum & bass. 

Featuring music from Calibre, Blu Mar Ten, Marcus Intalex, Goldie, Alix Perez, Zero T, Tokyo Prose, Atlantic Connection, Degster, and many more.

Liquified Soul 1 (Liquid Drum & Bass Mix)

Here we are with Volume 2 of my Liquified Soul sessions mix series. Two hours of soulful liquid drum & bass - on the deep, jazzy, and melodic end of the spectrum. Some dubby heaters in there as well, for good measure.

Compared to Volume 1, this one goes a bit more uptempo with higher energies -especially in the first hour, while the latter half goes deeper and more melodic which is more reminiscent of Volume 1. 

Featuring music from artists such as Calibre, LSB, Janaret, Zero T, FD, Goldie, Redeyes, RoyGreen & Protone, Atlantic Connection, Marcus Intalex, Syncline, and many more. 

Some prominent labels featuring in the mix are The North Quarter, Jazzsticks, Spearhead, Liquid V, Footnotes, Hospital Records, etc.

The response to Volume 1 was astounding, so I hope you all enjoy this next chapter as well.

My first house mix in quite a while, after exploring different styles in 2022 such as minimal and drum & bass. For the Selective Soul Sessions series, I am venturing back to my roots, while also keeping things fresh with contemporary styles and sounds. This mix ventures from deep house, to funky minimal, deep tech, and even some organic house vibes as well.

Selective Soul Sessions (Vol. 1)

On 4th June 2023, I had the honor of playing several extended sets with friends during my good pals' Andre & Brittany's 24-hour+ marathon rooftop party, in Bedstuy, Brooklyn NYC. We had a perfect sound setup for what was an intimate gathering filled with good vibes, great music, perfect weather, and plenty of debauchery 👾🥳🫠.

Here is one of my sets from during the early morning hours around 5am, under my Vek Neirbo alias. Trippy and groovy vibes in which I think you can hear and feel the debauchery of the party through the music.

Recently relocated in the Mile High City of Denver, Vek's musical focus is honed in on tripped-out, hypnotic minimal, tech house, and breakbeat -- best served after 4am, when the party is at its freakiest.

Rayzeh Podcast | 019 - Vek Neirbo

Volume 12 of my ongoing mix diary series, in which I depict the feelings I'm going through during notably emotional times in my personal life. 

Recorded May 11, 2024

This series has been ongoing for 11 years, and is always focused mostly on vocal deep house. The lyrical content and musical vibes are intentionally selected to transmute and release feelings that are much more quickly accessible to me through music, than through any other other means of introspection. 

It's a cathartic process for me to program, play, and listen back to these musical diaries. 

This chapter includes a mix of deep house, some organic and minimal house, as well as some breaks, and progressive house, with lots of edits of iconic voices such as Sade, Fleetwood Mac, Amy Winehouse, Billie Eilish, Nina Simone, etc, etc.

Every once in awhile, these mixes are done during happier days, but this wasn't one of those times. 

I did my best to bring some sunshine and optimism into the picture, but the heart feels how it feels, so this was a snapshot of a sad moment, forever caught in time. 🤷

This is my heart on my sleeve. Handle with care. I hope it resonates with some of you and hope you'll enjoy!

I had the honor of playing another fun summer party in Brooklyn this year on my good friends Andre and Brittany's rooftop terrace, where we celebrated the 4th of July under the fireworks. 

Here's a recording of a set I that I played from 2am till 530am or so, when the party was at its silliest. 

Weird at times, funky at others, often trippy, sporadically silly, occasionally deep, and sometimes just straight f%&@'d up beyond all recognition.

Mariano Mateljan is a Croatian DJ and producer who has long been a key figure in his country's underground electronic music scene. Known for his deep, groovy, and minimalistic style, Mariano has established himself as both a DJ and label head, launching the u.dig imprint to showcase like-minded artists. "In this extended 3.5-hour early morning session, recorded at home this winter here in Denver, I aimed to exemplify the hypnotic minimalist sound I envision for Hypnodose, both as a label and an event series. 

The Hypnodose "sound" was originally motivated and conceptualized last year by a singular moment in time on a dancefloor: in the early morning hours, when the music had me locked in a hypnotic state of groove, and all sense of time and the outside world completely vanished into the ether. 

This mix was recorded in the early morning hours, starting off in peak-time territory right out of the gate, while gradually flying the spacecraft into deeper, and more esoteric space-time continuum, as each hour ticks by..."

This volume of Macrodose Sessions was totally unplanned, in every way. 

What started out as a simple Saturday evening jam session with a little microdose 🍄 at home turned into this musical journey which manifested itself, and very accurately portrays the exact inner experience I had during the process. It was originally just meant to be a private recording, but after erroneously uploading it publicly in my weary state, upon listening back it became clear that it was simply meant to happen.

Neither my Vek Neirbo or Kev Obrien personas take full credit for this set, the mushroom god really created it. I was merely its muse. 🍄 😅

Throwback to February, 2013...... It took DAYS of searching to find this mix because the original platform it was recorded for was banned by Soundcloud and lost all their content.

Heartfelt music transcends time, meaning, and relevance. My first language is music, and to know me --- is to know my music, and vice versa. Over the years, I've received messages from quite possibly 50 or more amazing souls around the world describing the way this set and the ones to follow in it's path that year, have impacted them in their own personal way. 

This is dedicated to YOU. 

It was the unofficial first mix in the Series, which was a year-long series of vocal-heavy mixes that told my story in real time during one of the most trying years of my life.  

I am glad to finally have this mix uploaded after many long nights searching for it online, so that entire series in complete on my own soundcloud.

This series started in early 2013 and has continued over the years in its original concept: to be a true reflection of what I am feeling and experiencing in life at the moment of each chapter's conception.

The goal was to find more fitting places for the heart than in the trash, as no heart should be discarded in such a manner. Every heart should have a home.

The "fairy tale" may have ended, but what is that anyway? A life with a picket fence, lots of furniture and annoying little people to take care of occupying your entire life? 

Sometimes we realize that reality is real, and being incompatible romantically doesn't mean that person should be discarded from your life --- especially when your relationship caused you to both move forward as completely revised and improved versions of the people you were before your paths crossed.

2022 Update: We got back together in 2020 after her cancer diagnosis reunited us and made us realize we'd both changed quite a bit over 7 years, but the love hadn't changed a bit. 

Now I listen to this as an audio journal to let me feel how far we've come. I'm not a natural writer, so my journals are in music format. 😊
