This is improvisation at it's finest. Zeke played a riff, I burped, and a song was born.

We had played several songs that Zeke and Gene had worked on before, and, during a break, I inexplicably decided to practice the intro to Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo"...to which Gene remarked "The Drummer got a idea!"....somehow my idea turned into this.
The great significance of this tune is that it was my introduction to the concept of "Free Form Funkafied Filth".

My first ever attempt at recording. One Nady DM7 mic, one XLR cable, One Yamaha MC102c mixer. One Ayotte custom drum kit with Mapleworks custom snare, Tama Octobans, and Paiste cymbals. Recorded on Garage Band 1.0 on a late 2005 G5 Power Mac. Just a flag on this rock until I get some substantive recordings finished and uploaded.

One Mic Boogie

Just recording on my Mac while waiting for my Windows box to pull 57 patches. This was a failed experimental mic config. I though I'd put the overheads a little closer to the toms (since I'm using tom mics as overheads until I get phantom transformers for my condensers...seein's how I only got 4 XLR inputs); but they ended up picking up too much of the kick...AND the gain was too high on the kick mic; so, I had to put a lot of  software compression, dicker, and gating on the mixdown...which makes the mix a bit muddy. This does lend the benefit of making the drumming itself a little less awful. This is not a composition. Just 4 1/2 minutes of finger rolls while I was waiting for my laptop to reboot.

Patch Tuesday

Are two heads really better than one? This was an experiment to compare 1-ply vs 2-ply heads with my recording setup. The left channel is the "1-ply" setup, using a Ludwig LM-410 Supersensitive with a Rennaisance Ambassador batter and coated G1s on the toms. The right channel is the "2-ply" setup with a Mapleworks 6.5 x 14" custom snare with a reverse-dot Emperor batter and clear EC2s on the toms. Cymbals, Kick head, mics and sticks are identical for each track. The master level was adjusted +2db on the left and -2db on the right to account for the EC2s being naturally slightly louder. All other levels and filters are exactly identical.
 I naturally tend to use a French grip with the single ply setup and a German grip with the 2 ply setup, due to the dynamic differences. The G1s have a noticeably better bounce than do the EC2s, so, while I tried to maintain the French grip for both tracks, I naturally shifted closer to the butt end on the 2-ply side.
