SlothBoogie Records welcomes Deep House maestro DJ Aakmael onto its roster this March with ‘The Hardbody Project’ EP, comprised of four original compositions from the Richmond, US-based artist.

Across the past decade and a half DJ Aakmael has unveiled an impressive back catalogue of soul-drenched, dynamic deep house via revered imprints such as Uzuri, Church, Scissor & Thread, Freerange and Second Hand Records amongst many more. Here we see his latest material perfectly interlace with SlothBoogie Records own impressive back catalogue of bumping house and raw deep cuts.

Leading the release is ‘Hardbody’, laid out across seven minutes with chopped brass samples, bright key sequences, modulating Moogesque resonant leads and shuffled drums before ‘Track 166’ shifts focus over to a deeper aesthetic via dubbed out chord swells, organic percussion and twinkling piano melodies.

The aptly named ‘Deepshyt’ opens the flip side, as the name would suggest employing an amalgamation of deep and entrancing synth work, crisp drums and spoken word vocal chants. ‘Strobe’ then rounds out the release with a more disco-tinged House feel, fusing together funk guitar licks, cinematic strings and a snaking bass groove atop Aakmael’s signature swinging rhythmic feel.

Electronic music pioneer and Poker Flat boss Steve Bug is a name that needs little introduction, as one of Germany's true house masters he has consistently pushed musical boundaries to become a taste maker and trend-setter of a generation. Joining forces once more with regular collaborator Clé for their joint Nu Groove debut, the pair who have been behind a vast number of elite club cuts now deliver 'Let It Go / Suitcase In A Box' for an imprint steeped in house history. Opening with 'Let It Go', ethereal strings and an enriched, buttery vocal are paired with a wickedly deep bassline and acidic synths for a track that sounds like it was ripped straight from a 90s NYC dancefloor, while the accompanying Bassmix offers a headsier, dub-like alternative. 'Suitcase In A Box' is a little tougher in its composition, as Steve Bug & Clé's patented old-school drums and another hefty dose of acid influence are layered upon a relentless beat for a track destined for in-the-know floors.

wewillalwaysbealovesong has very quietly become a much treasured outlet for classy hosue sounds by those who know. It is the on form Retromigration who steps up now following EPs on Handy and Wolf Music that deserve more attention than they seem to have so far got. He brings his sleek modern deep house style to the fore here with opener 'Secret Of A Pimp' layering up crispy boom-bap house drums with warm, whirring pads and smart vocal sample. The don Jimpster adds his textbook musicality to a fine remix, then 'Flying Lotus' brings a more airy and melodic vibe for outdoor dancing. The Franc Spangler remix is dubby and deep as you like.

A force in the deep house scene since its first foot forward in 1999, Yoruba Records is overseen by the much loved and highly respected artist and producer, Osunlade. Consistently delivering a diverse range of glorious beats that span deep house, to soulful jazz, and hip hop. Although dance has been at its centre, Yoruba has experimented with a diverse array of electronica, evolving and growing with the times. From its humble beginnings, the label’s spiritual connection has been at the heart of everything it does, guided by the energies and vibrations that allow passion to create honest music that truly reflects the soul. Here label head Osunlade returns with his first release of 2022. ‘Black Woman Cry’ is the lead single from his forthcoming album ‘Spectrum’. With full intention to be a deep in the night club banger, ‘Black Woman Cry’ delivers some serious heat on the beats. Pulsating stabs form the mesmerizing atmosphere while the haunting sounds of women’s screams serve as a timely reflection of the worlds pain right now.
