We're very much behind Mala Ika's manifesto. The Guadeloupe-born, France-based producer and DJ urges everyone to embrace their oddities and be weird - let's be real, normal is boring...

As an ode to championing your oddities, she launched the media company BeWeird and her label Weirdos Records, the latter as a space to house her own music and that of her like-minded contemporaries such as Amarcord, Neurotiker and Tony Y Not. Her latest outing sees her join forces with Antipop for Touch and Retouch, a two-tracker of fresh, driving Italo house.

Mala's future-facing take on Italo, disco, indie dance and synth has caught the ears of several other labels too, namely Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant, Clash Lion and Wrong Era, who she's released remixes and tracks with over the last few years.

On today's mix she blends some of those signature flavours, from indie-tinged disco and contemporary Italo to driving synth cuts and cosmic house jams.... Delayed Monday blues rearing their head? Fear not, Mala's here to put a smile on your face on this grey, cloudy Tuesday.

Mala Ika: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

The first offering on Australian label Lunatic Music comes from Jamie Blanco of Ess O Ess. Unit of Measure takes the listener on an acid-laced journey, while Sample Bases shows us Blanco’s range and stays true to the title. To complement the release, both cuts have been flipped and remixed. The A-side getting dubbed out by the don Conrad McDonnell of the Idjut Boys, While the B-side cops treatment by local lunatics Dexter Gregg & Mick Harney of Oak Park.

'Electro punk disco', what's not to like about that? This is the name that London duo Baba Ali coined to describe their electrifying sound which takes a little bit of all the things we love here at Ransom Note and stirs them up in a big old pot.

Comprised of American musician Baba Doherty and British guitarist Nik Balchin, the group blend elements of punk funk and electro with NYC disco and no wave, that's equal parts for the dance floor and for the stage, which they're no stranger to.

They've been touring up and down the country since their debut LP dropped in 2021 and they're showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. With the release of their sophomore album imminent - a debut on Memphis Industries called 'Laugh Like A Bomb' which has been on repeat on 6Music - they join The Go! Team on tour around the UK as of this weekend. But before that they'll be making a pitstop at our own R$N residency at The Social on 10th March for an intimate live set...

Ahead of the gig, we asked Baba to give us a flavour of all his influences, which he does in fine fashion with this mix of groovy, crunchy funk, punk, synth pop, new wave and electro... Perfect fodder for your thirsty Thursday.
