The idea behind this project is something exotic I devised. While it's a dancefloor set, I crafted it as a narrative in three parts or "Acts". This set is Act 1 of 3 acts which as a whole, reveal the story.

DROID'S NIGHT OUT - an impossible love story between a male audio research droid, and a female human scientist (who is secretly a sonic sorceress) with a fetish for droids... a tale spanning the gulf between the cybernetic and the natural, between science and magick.

This is one of my fav house tunes, which I re-recorded with natural analog flange/phasing via double copies on vinyl, for that far-out swirly underwater effect.  

It'll be featured in a new mix I'll be dropping soon, which is the 3rd and final Act of my DROID'S NIGHT OUT trilogy of sets which have a linked musical narrative.

Our latest Mix-Ins features the visionary grooves of Seattle's Cloud Cat. More than just an ill mix, this set is the finale of a trilogy of sets linked by a narrative, titled "DROID'S NIGHT OUT". A futuristic techno love story between a droid compelled to become more human, and a human scientist with a fetish for droids who has secret science-magic that may make such transformations possible.  

The 1h 45min set is sub-divided into three mini sets, each a 'scene' with a mood arc, ranging from dark trippy soulful funk, to emphatic peak hour house, capped off by deep futuristic techno - with many vocal tunes throughout giving voice to the events experienced by the droid and scientist.

In Cloud Cat's own words:
Still processing the tumultuous experience of Sheila's electro-biology science-majick during Act 2, the Droid begins to have the fledgling human emotions and desires that have been his greatest need. The feelings are more confounding and intoxicating than even his A.I. could imagine. He realizes he must decide to regress or evolve more deeply.

Sheila is developing a need to transform towards the cybernetic herself, to enhance her powers and she senses it will aid in having the two become one. It remains to be seen how their connection will manifest.

Their paths are unique and intertwined, and the future holds untold events with music ever at the fore. Yet the Droid's creators don't want him to deviate from his programming...

ACT 1: Droids Can Wiggle, Too

A male audio research droid begins a night out, sensing the astounding presence of an unknown human woman from afar.  He later encounters a mysterious woman on the dancefloor. She and the droid develop a curious connection despite their physical differences. A playful and epic dancefloor flirtation develops before they part for the evening, and the droid ponders what's to come as he drifts off to sleep.

With each Mix-Ins entry we strive to offer something that’s symbolic to the DJ and also resonates deeply with us musically.   Cloud Cat’s Act 2 of the Droid’s Night Out opus is exactly the type of mix we love to share.

This musical narrative of a human falling for a droid has been in our conversations with Cloud Cat for some time and we are thrilled to share Act 2 with you.  We fell in love with Act 2 as it’s dominated by electro and breaks representing 'her vibe'. DROID'S NIGHT OUT ACT 2: The Arcane Arts of Sheila Cyclotron
In Act 1 the droid met a mysterious human woman on the dance floor.  She is Sheila Cyclotron, a lab data scientist by day, but by night she is a sonic sorceress and secretly practices the forbidden science of Electro-Biology. Attracted to the cybernetic, she craves meaningful connection. The droid has imperfect circuitry and has a need to be more human. Compelled by her feelings for him, Sheila uses the untamed forces of her audio science-magick in an attempt to transform and expand his mind and emotions, but what will the result be for the droid, and for them both?

Served up by Chicago's legendary mix master, Terry Mullan, this has been one of my favorite mixes for years.  A joyous and funky House journey which includes hard house, warm and soulful house, and some acid and electro house as well.  

Terry Mullan has been one of my key DJ inspirations since I first heard him spin live in the mid 90's.  He's truly brilliant at finding the perfect alignment of two records to have them add to each other, and a has killer instinct for what a good 'peak hour' vibe sounds and feels like for the dancers.
