DJ Chinua is a Los Angeles & New Orleans based DJ and event curator interested in facilitating community and connection through live events and global sounds. His projects include a two year collaboration with Solange Knowles as resident DJ for Saint Heron’s Proclamation dance party series as well as a three year collaboration with DOPEciety as resident DJ and producer for Couches. He is also the founder and co-sound selector for Ascendance, a monthly zodiac themed Afrodiasporic dance party.

As a Longtime Horst & C12 resident DTM Funk he serves the common denominator between soul, groove and rhythm. Focusing on these three elements instead of being tied to any genres makes for some interesting choices. The San-Kofa Rhythm Record founder and record digger pleasantly guided an elated crowd through his eclectic record collection, ranging from percussion-driven groovers to Jazz funk records & undiscovered soul  and house gems. Whether it’s an early afternoon festival or closing down a dark club night, the dance floor will surely be moving. 
At the beginning of this year he found a stack of Kwaito cassettes and records in a local record store in Nairobi. In recent weeks he has found the time to digitize it.
Kwaito is a style of music that developed in the 1990s in the townships of South Africa and quickly became popular with young people.
It also has elements of disco music, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, reggae, and jazz. South African singers like Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, and Chicco Twala influenced the kwaito sound as well.
