Garage Mahal

I was sitting in a bar when the original Lipps Inc. version came over the jukebox.  As I nodded my head in time, it struck me that how chopped up the elements of the song are: guitar, vocals, strings.  Specifically, none of those instruments are playing at the same time.  I paid my tab and rushed home, deciding that I should make a funkier refresh of it my next project.  I got a version cobbled together in a couple weeks, but needed some additional help to make it club-able.

I was lucky enough to be able to bring it to Lee Coombs as mixing project.  He did a masterful job of getting my edits and samples up to snuff, hence is he is credited as "Mixed and additional production by."  Many thanks Lee!

Lipps Inc. - Funkytown (Rumblemunk Remix)

The worst kept secret is that not only did I do the soundtrack for an iPhone game called "Coral Racer" but I actually wrote the game too.  The track is supposed to remind you of dancing on a beach in Ibiza, with a cool drink in hand, dancing the afternoon away.  Or swimming under water dodging coral, whichever comes easiest to you.

Rumblemunk - Twist Turfin'

My alter-ego Rumblemunk was DJing an after-party when a friend named Neil asked me to make a mix of the biggest, baddest, bassiest beats I had. It took me a few weeks to comb through my collection and add new stuff until I was happy that it would make him happy. I gave it to him and a couple days later received this text message: "Oh brother, that's some filthy bass..."

Fair warning though: subwoofers are required.



Rumblemunk - Neil's Big Bottom Mix

This was THE song that got me into listening to Beck.  Just a little touch-up to make it bigger for a dance floor.  This one gets people singing along with you!

Take a strutting 303, slide in a bouncing sub line, top with some old-school funk drums and serve with some classy horn stabs, and you have this, the Acid Bounce. Rumblemunk - Acid Bounce

One of my favorite old school tracks touched up with lots of low end and a warm but grinding bass line.  Perfect for a late night dance floor that needs a break from the complextro monotony that has gotten to be just a little bit out of control.  If you listen carefully, you can hear strains of the Anthrax heavy metal collaboration with Public Enemy from the mid 90s.

Public Enemy - Bring the Noise (Rumblemunk Remix)

I know, it's late to just NOW be posting a set for Burning Man 2010, but it took a bit to get it right.  This is not the actual recording from Wednesday night on the Garage Mahal art car, but rather the same songs played in my home studio the following week.  Since I don't edit my sets after recording them, if there is a terrible mistake I have to re-record the whole thing.  Think of it this way, it took the Beatles 47 times to get the perfect take of "Penny Lane".  This took about 12 takes, but I left a couple small mistakes in, just so it sounds human.

Thanks for the Garage Mahal crew for letting me play on the art car, a first for me at Burning Man!  We had that bus rocking!  Seriously, my stomach was ill afterwards.  Thankfully, the DJ booth is only on the 2nd floor not the crow's nest...

Rumblemunk - Burning Man 2010 Mix

A down-tempo, story-driven breakbeat groove with lots of soul.  Perfect to start a funky set or bring down the early-morning crew.

The amazing thing about this track is that the vocals required only two edits.  They just sort of magically fit into place for almost 100% of the song.
