Part of my musical output has been doing light soundtrack work, scoring for TV and radio commercials and industrial media production.

I call this “mu$ic for hire”. Lol.  It’s something I started for business output, that I’ve been doing since the late 1980’s.  It’s completely different from my usual Rock, Pop or Ambient Electronic soundscapes.  I really enjoy writing for other people’s frameworks when I get the opportunity.

There’s a lot of these little pieces in the vaults going way back, that I’m now going through and re-working and remastering.  What’s different about this one called “Discovery Road”? It was one of the first pieces of music I put together and finished aimed at business output, and it was done back when I had little to no equipment. 

What I did have, that I made full use of, was a very rare MIDI Guitar prototype that I managed to purchase direct from the Los Angeles inventor called the “Beetle Quantar”.  It was the first of an early technology breakthrough in playing guitar and having it transfer everything you played, instantly into computer sequencer code or musical notation.  It tracked faster than you could play, and almost never made mistakes.  My first experience playing it....I was blown away.

There had been almost nothing like it available before, that didn’t cost tens of thousands of dollars.  For the first time, it now meant I could actually play the sound of any other instrument, and transfer all those ideas flying around inside my head into finished musical scores. 

The guitar looked like a Fender Stratocaster.  It had no acoustic output.  You played it exactly the same as any other guitar, but it had all very thin “B” strings that were digitally scanned with a priority high frequency sonar signal that was sent down the frets and neck, and measured the distance of where your fingers were playing.  You only heard the sound of whatever synthesizer or sampler you had connected it too. 

Tracking was phenomenal.  It captured everything: strums, string bends, fingerpicking.  To this day, I haven’t really found better technology, but unfortunately, the company Beetle had their patents overruled by another major manufacturer, and were put of of business.  The other company came out with their own version of the guitar scanning technology, then quickly dropped it, and sadly, for whatever reasons, they buried it, and no one has ever used it again.

The Beetle Quantar MIDI guitar I used for nearly all the parts in this music (for quite awhile I didn’t even own a keyboard), sadly, had seen it’s day years ago, and now sits unused in it’s case in the basement, very much in need of repairs. I doubt if there are any replacement parts floating around out there somewhere in the world.

But it got me started!  And I did a whole lot of paying work with it.  I could do this - by playing my guitar!  And I’ve been experimenting and growing that exciting dream ever since.
