You hear a lot these days that things just aren't like they used to be. In an era dominated by algorithmically assembled playlists and the "need" for a social media presence to make a splash, it can sometimes feel like the underground and DIY qualities that defined the dance music of yesteryear have been flattened to fit the screens and speakers in our pockets. There's no arguing it's easier to have your finger on the pulse with show alerts and release notifications, but it's hard to deny the feeling of falling in love with a tune for the first time without any pre-existing context.

With this in mind, consider the three absolute heaters that caught many off guard in November of 2020; without knowledge of the creative force behind them, reputable artists and tastemakers alike were floored by a triptych of tough-yet-nimble tracks. At the time, the artist was unknown, and the tracks were all untitled.And so was the label that released them. With their debut record (the aforementioned cuts collected as uu001) and each one since, unknown - untitled is a label that has absolutely struck a chord in the dance world, scratching an itch that many of us didn't know we had. unknown - untitled previews their releases anonymously and unveil artist and track info initially on the inside of the records they ship out. This gives listeners the opportunity to imprint their full imagination and subjective experience onto each unique outing. We now know several of the artists responsible (we won't ruin the surprise, go dig for yourself).

Today we speak to the mastermind behind the label (and an intrepid selector in their own right), uu rhythm, whose curatorial mind and impeccable taste has fuelled the unknown - untitled project since its beginning. Alongside an absolutely stellar exclusive mix for Bolting Bits, uu rhythm agreed to peel the curtain back a bit for us.

Originally released on the R&S Records sub-label Global Cuts in 1993, ‘20HZ’ by Capricorn became the breakthrough track for its creator Hans Weekhout, a Dutch multi-instrumentalist who started his career recording and mixing for international artists such as Falco and Ian Gillan.

With its memorable combination of those rolling and thunderous marching drums, glacial marimba-like melodies and a tense, trance inducing atmosphere, ‘20HZ’ has become one of dance music’s most enduring tracks.  Hitting the singles charts in Holland, Belgium, UK and France on release, and still being played week in and week out across clubs and festivals thirty years later, it’s fair to say that Capricorn’s snare drum driven hit can be classed as a bone fide classic.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of this behemoth anthem, R&S Records have enlisted an eclectic line-up of artists to add their own touches to a suite of remixes. Dutch composer and Apollo Records artist Andert Tysma reshapes ‘20HZ’ into a sublime ambient piece, accompanied by some tender piano work and soaring strings, whilst Italian DJ/producer Marco Lys stays true to the original, deploying a fresh and modern take and aiming it squarely at the dancefloor.

London based producer Vromm has a penchant for the UK bass and beats culture that has influenced him since the late 1980s, and his remix of ‘20HZ’ really spins the original upside down, deconstructing and rebuilding over granite hard beats.  And it’s left to legendary DJ Carl Cox to round off this broad remix package.  As a DJ who helped break this record on its original release, it’s befitting that the global dance icon puts his stamp firmly onto it, jacking up the drums and turning up a big room monster version, ‘oh yes, oh yes’!

Set for release on May 12, 'Sonic Reader' is the debut album by Singapore-born, Warsaw-based artist, DJ, and producer @atikaaltar.

Produced throughout the summer-autumn of 2022, the 12-track album was made with a classic mix of virtual Roland drum machines, TR909, 808, CR-76  & software synthesizers; oscillating through techno, experimental and ambient.

'Constellations' balances electronic percussion, tribal rhythm and cosmic synths with a unique archipelago groove.

This mix is the culmination of my two year journey as a dj so far. I truly believe in house music as both a sound as well as a culture and deep-seated belief. Which is why I decided to bookmark the mix with DJ Deeon (rip) and the all-time soulful classic “Promised Land”, it’s a celebration as well as a love letter to the music that has changed my life forever. 

For me the promised land of house music hasn’t faded away. No matter what happens, house music will never be about guest lists and exclusivity, frat bros, pseudo-intellectualism and superiority complexes and bruised egos.
