Just then he spied a creature lurking by the door
A red pair of eyes and a long black tail

It bolted quick as lightning with its tail lopped off

The night got colder, the old man hungrier still
He only had that tail to cook in his swill
Dozing after dinner, came a clawing sound
The old man, frightened, called out his hounds

They chased that creature deep into the swamp
He heard their howls echo like a hoot owl's haunt
Three brave hounds took off to the woods, 
But only two came back all covered in blood.

Later that night, again came the sound
Like a ragged pair of claws scratching in the ground
Then came a whisper that the man did know
That creature craving back its Tailypo.

This time the two dogs chased after it
But tired they were and it gave them the slip
They chased it again deep in the swamp
But only one came back all bloody and damp

The old man shook that whole night long
And tried to get to sleep by humming a song
But soon again he heard that awful sound.
Of ragged claws scratching down in the ground

One more time, the last hound lit out 
And the terrified man began to shout
But it was too late and the dog was gone
And the man was left alone just to hum his song

In the darkest night just before the dawn,
The sleepless man began to yawn
Just then in his bed he froze up still
As he turned and saw red eyes coming for the kill

It said, "Taily-po Taily-po

He reached for his hatchet but it was too late
The creature set upon him fierce and irate 
Screaming for its tail until the dawn had come
And the poor old man was never seen again

They say the chimney was all that stood
Of the lonesome cabin deep in the wood
But if you go listen down by the ground
You can hear claws scratching and that high pitched sound
