The theme is the end of quarantine, freedom, and new beginnings. This is our most important summer. We wanted to start with the tender energy of dawn out of a long dark night. The mid-set breakbeats represent breaking the chains of quarantine and isolation. Penultimately, Dubtribe's deeply ambivalent Do It Now still inspires a new beginning for us all, on its 20th anniversary. We hope this mix feels as liberating for you as it was for us to make. Perhaps, like birds at dawn.

Dao & Pwny - Calling the World - FNF 2021

Burning Man didn't happen this year. There weren't 20,000 people in the desert who built a city, did some art, and shared a community based on principles and joy. Nope, definitely none of that. And this certainly wasn't a set I played under a beautiful shade structure to a packed house on a wild Friday night, so don't get the wrong idea when you listen to it. This never happened.

Major Trouble at Deoxidized - Friday Night at Plan B Burn

This week, we have another tag team from It's a New Day + Breakfast of Champions. Our very own kev/null (@kevnull) with special guest davesimon (@djdavesimon)! 

Here's what they had to say about the set:

Kevin: What an epic event. Dave and I started DJing coincidentally the same year and for the past decade have played at many of the same events, supported each other, and shared opportunities. To have our first tag team be at this special event, especially after such a long hiatus, was truly a peak experience.

Dave: Meeting up to prepare and practice was hampered by all the things - 210 miles between us (Oakland/Reno), the holidays, an oddly limited number of flight options, and an insane blizzard that shut down the interstates.  Thankfully two years of streaming experience inspired us to practice through a combination of high fidelity Zoom and Facetime calls, Dropbox and Soundcloud.  Our mixers interfaced to Zoom, with bidirectional audio mixer monitoring + screen sharing made it possible to preview mixes, talk through sequences, flows, and visualize hot-cues.  Using a common method for marking up tracks, we were able to make it happen remotely.  Our first in-person practice session was the night before BOC, on New Years Eve, with a thrown-together DJ setup on a friends' kitchen table.

Sometimes you realize that it's burn day and you have WAY too much leftover meat in various coolers at somewhat questionable temperatures. So you pull the grill out to the bar, and fire her up. Other campmates bring more food, you get out the megaphone and feed the neighborhood all day. If you're lucky, your favorite dj from home (and role model camp creator)will have camped with you that year and magically have 12 hours of songs with words on them AND be in the mood to not leave the decks all day. History will be made and a favorite tradition formed. Minds blown, songs sung at the top of many lungs, and much dust kicked up by many boots.

Years later you'll want to start a soundcloud page for camp, and maybe drag your feet for a while, but along will come a mix, slaved away on throughout a pandemic, by the very dj that set the tone for that magical experience. Part of a series representing our remergence from said pandemic, and a certain psychedelic therapy that feels like a romp around the playa. So you’ll start the soundcloud and just like the Annual Impromptu Questionable Meat Bonanza, a new platform for us to express ourselves will be created under the guidance of the same dj who’s already had such an indelible impact on our culture. 

We're thrilled to have @djspaceotter be the first mix we post here, and look forward to sharing more mixes from our other crazy talented camp mates, and friends!

I had the incredible honor of playing on the main stage of FnF this year at 10:45pm. The theme of this year's campout was, "Balls" so the set features a couple of original tracks I made to go along with the theme. Thanks so much to the coordinators, the volunteers, the music team, and all the amazing people for making the return to FnF such a joy.

What an amazing experience Love Burn 2023 was. A highlight was definitely getting to play at The Freakeasy's Kitty Kat Island on Saturday night to an amazing crowd and in front of…an articulated giant cat that shoots lasers! LAZER CAT.

I also had the opportunity to play a lot of the original tracks I'd been working on for the past year including one I did the weekend before the Burn and another I wrote specifically for the Burn. I hope you enjoy this journey! It's got a little something for everyone.

2018 is my 9th consecutive outing to Burning Man. Consistently one of my favourite places to be and to play are under the LED palm trees of Decadent Oasis. This year, they had the splendid location of Esplanade and 3:30. I played two very different sets there. This was at their annual "Welcome Home" party on Monday night—a not-so-gentle hug for everyone starting off the week. I had a full 90 minutes to take everyone on a prime time journey through some hard electro breaks and driving psytrance. Enjoy!

(Yet More) From the Archives: Live at Opulent Temple, Tuesday Night 2008

In a fanciful quest to get a set (or 2) from every year at Burning Man I've played here on Soundcloud, here is more unearthed arcana.  This one though is not posting for the sake of posting.  When I look back at all these as a body of work, I consider this one of my best, most favorite sets of all time I've ever played there.

I've referred to this in other postings as a time when 'peak electro' met prime tech funk and break beat, when there was soooo much good music coming out with dirty grooves, indie vocals, and rolling techno inspired backbeat.  I just love every song as it moves through Miles Dyson, Lee Coombs, Justice, Alex Metric, Adam Freeland, Dylan Rhymes, Blende and more.   This is not shaman playa tech sleep house, this is dirty ass intense and distorted playa music that should be played loud.

Like many sets, it also starts with some spoken word.  An intro from myself, and long time friend and conscious moment collaborator at many of my sets, Shahid Buttar (currently running for Congress in SF to unseat Nancy Pelosi).
