Techno sets

A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

Haven is a place of safety, warmth, and comfort. 


Something a little different from my last few mixes - many of you know me for faster uptempo club mixes, but I also love and dig a lot of slower hypnotic tracks since I started DJing in 2007. I wanted to make a paced-out mix that I could really sink into and feel safe to tap into states of intimacy and warmth.

This mix was recorded on July 26 during one of Clara Tatjana and I's long music sessions in my studio. We were jamming to tunes and she contributed many awesome selections to the tracklist <3

With the current wave of lockdowns and many gig cancellations, I thought it fitting to share this feeling as we all incubate for the next.

Mala Junta rabble rousers DJ Tool and D.Dan are up next for Zenaari Mix 010, but leave your biases at the door because this isn’t their usual high-speed mischief. In the vein of Zenaari’s hallmark off-kilter electronics the Berlin based pair are here instead to take you on a journey within. This one’s less for warehouse raving, more for solo spiritual contemplation: an invitation to probe the subconscious and transcend material experience. It’s a thorough exploration of their ambient predilections that range from featherlight textures to faded melodies that lilt like waves on a metaphysical shore. This liminal collage of gentle lullabies and acoustic murmurs is soft and a touch plaintive, but warm and loving all the same. Invoking everything from glitchy IDM to ballads that bend towards the strange and pineal, a technicolor dream sequence conjured up by this offbeat techno double-act.

Helena Hauff (@helena-hauff) expertly curated DJ sets spanning acid, electro, techno, EBM, and post-punk. Her powerful drum beats collide with freely wandering melodies. Her sound is tailor-made for those who appreciate raw, yet restrained intensity, dragging the dance floor into a frosty abyss. Her debut album "A Tape" in 2015 garnered attention for its intricate manipulation of sound, where she meticulously arranges gritty and rough noises, filling in the gaps with rhythmic intricacies. Her other releases, "Discreet Desires" and the EP "Have You Been There, Have You Seen," experimentally layer and intertwine, with twisted waveforms akin to rusted artifacts, creating an unfriendly listening experience that compels bodily movement to escape Helena Hauff's auditory swamp. It evokes sounds from the Hague's western coast in the Netherlands—blending synthesized tones of Italo Disco with the gritty spirit of Detroit. Despite its unfriendliness, "Have You Been There, Have You Seen" still offers warmth and rhythmic service to dancers with tracks like "Nothing Is What I Know" and "Gift." This year, renowned dance label fabric Records recognized Helena Hauff's unique selections and released "fabric presents Helena Hauff," recreating the dance scenes she once fostered at the Golden Pudel club in Hamburg, Germany.

Gigging incessantly (and still lugging a heavy box of records across the world), Helena's reputation earned her an invitation to join the BBC Radio 1 Residency. She was the subject of cover features for Crack Magazine and DJ Mag, played headline sets at Sonar (b2b with Ben UFO) and Dekmantel, and at the end of 2017, Crack Magazine declared Helena "The Most Exciting DJ In The World (Right Now)" and her ballistic BBC Essential Mix was voted the best of 2017. With razor-sharp precision, her melodies redefine Electro/Techno, adhering to her signature cold and dark taste over the past decade, regardless of current musical trends. Utilizing turntables for minimalist yet forceful performances, she effortlessly navigates between peaks and troughs, even with the risk of needle skips, confidently rolling cigarettes as she cruises at high speeds between highs and lows, making her a unique and standout figure in the scene.

Kicking off full speed comes an hour of untrammelled techno from Belgian artist Phara. The Fuse Brussels resident has racked up quite a following with his club focused sound, both via slick releases as much as behind decks spinning vinyl-only sets. Post-punk, wave, EBM, electro, Detroit and Berlin provide the context for a curious talent that has published warped melodies on blue chip labels like Soma, SK Eleven, Stockholm LTD and Planet Rhythm. His off kilter earmark is available too via his ‘gimmick-free’ record label Phaaar, a more immediate and personal vessel for his own experiments in sound. And it’s not all off the shelf, 2022 saw him take his Korg EMX-1 onstage for a debut live performance that presents yet another side to his many-layered craft, and a new alias titled In Glass promises to reimagine both house and dubbier references. With bated breath comes this next instalment, powerful beats from the get go, tracks with striking forward momentum interwoven with atomic precision and a primary feeling for ambiance that doesn’t miss a trick. Phara taps a wealth of experience and knowledge of records for Bassiani Podcast 222, shadowy frequencies and volative basslines, everything you love about techno brought together by this prolific and multifaceted artist.

Helena Hauff, a former resident DJ at Hamburg's Golden Pudel Club, rose to global prominence with her 2015 album "Discreet Desires." Known for her authentic style and expertly curated DJ sets spanning acid, electro, EBM, and techno, she has headlined major festivals like Sonar and Dekmantel. Hauff’s BBC Essential Mix was named the best of 2017, and her latest album, "Qualm," continues her raw, powerful approach to music.

DJ MELL G emerged through 2020 livestreams, quickly gaining recognition. She launched JUICY GANG RECORDS in 2021 and has since toured globally, blending electro, techno, and breakbeat. Performing at top venues like fabric and Golden Pudel Club, she’s also collaborated with artists like DJ GODFATHER. Her debut LP, "ISSUES," reflects her journey and commitment to mental health awareness in the music industry.

Next up comes Canadian-born polymath Darwin, who’s been getting Berliners talking ever since she kicked off her event series REEF back at now defunct venue Griessmühle. Tired of providing partygoers with the same formulaic sounds they’d come to expect, she started to play around with others, dubstep and bass among them. It was a fresh approach that through persistence ended up paying off with a form that’s as animate, subaquatic and essential to its surroundings as the ocean reefs that inspired the name. A UK-leaning sound, that pays homage to breaks, drum n bass and garage and fuses it with a techno more indicative of her chosen digs. Nowadays that approach has really gained traction and her parties blossomed into something much larger, encompassing her own selections, whether at UNFOLD or closing Berghain’s Klubnacht, as well as the launch of her SPE:C imprint. Her loose selection and low-end frequencies are a modern take on a long tradition of rumbling bass and out-and-out techno, brought together with a killer instinct for the hourly requirements of a dancefloor with high expectations. Following on from her previous techno stints at Bassiani, Podcast 251 further explores this side and delves back into her roots; a studio mix brought to you from this true pioneer, mastered by bestie Esposito.

Last year, on November 30th, Fuse welcomed Denmark's Mama Snake to our control room in light of her Amniote Editions night.  With an untamed aura spreading through the space, the dark hours were marked by hypnotic, slightly mental, and utterly intense temperaments.

Snapping between writhing acid lines, crisp tribal rhythms, and trance-laced techno, her selections struck a perfect balance between the meditative and the manic. The floor was hers: fluid, fierce, and full of intent. A reminder that mastery doesn’t always shout; it listens, reacts, and dares to draw outside the lines when the need knocks.
