Like that of the eponymous asphalt devourer he draws his name from, Jensen Interceptor has no time for obliging introductions and lame rides across techno dullsville. Well one to mash and smash, Mikey Melas' sound is entirely designed to sling a brick into the game's well-oiled mechanics by way of contribution. Having amassed an enviable amount of releases for some of the finest labels out there, including Maceo Plex's Lone Romantic, Cultivated Electronics, SolarOneMusic, UTTU, Central Processing Unit, Private Persons, Pinkman & his own label International Chrome co-founded with long time collaborator Assembler Code, and countless more, the Sydney born and raised whizz has long traded his worn out brakes for some hounding breaks, and made the acid rave playground his area of expertise, as asserted by the reactions triggered off by his live appearances at today's most renowned festivals and parties - literally tearing apart the likes of Dimensions, Tresor, Nuits Sonores and the late Concrete's ever picky dance floors upside down.
Speeding the Jupiterian highway for a routine, Jensen Interceptor guns for the weak-kneed and the bone-weary, luring the dancers shapeless mass into a house-of-god'esque lair to feed them on his volatile mixture of high-octane, Detroit-perfused electro, post Tour de France Kraut & EBM, and alien sounds sourced further afield. With a dozen 12-inches in as many months, needless to say 2018 has been a record-breaking year for Mikey, setting new standards for a producer who's been tirelessly gathering momentum; neither easing off the gas pedal in terms of studio grind, nor yielding to the main industry's distinct production standards. Unpigeonholeable by nature, the release of his highly anticipated debut full-length, 'Mother', on Lone Romantic crowned him as a producer with a much broader vision than the single/EP format ever allowed the short-stay listener to understand. Seismic bass bomber, hyper-reliable floor steersman, but above all a deadeye epic workout composer with a sixth sense for melody making: no mystery as to why artists such as Aphex Twin, Helena Hauff, Dave Clarke, DJ Stingray, Nina Kraviz and The Hacker have all come to endorse his music wholeheartedly so much JI is a safe, yet uncompromising bet. better known as Reka, has blown up on the world stage since beginning out as a DJ more than 10 years ago. Since then, she’s become a long time resident at Tresor, embarked on a career as a producer ( her debut EP, Diving the Innermost came out on Phase Fatal’s BITE in 2018) and made the jump to Berghain. But there’s more to Mendez than being a connoisseur of all genres dark and hard-edged. In addition to being a DJ, Mendez is an entrepreneur and a science enthusiast. KEYI sat down to talk with her about her world before techno and the ways in which research and precision define her creative work and her extra musical life.

Shao Yanpeng aka Shao, previously known under the moniker Dead J, is considered to be one of China’s most important electronic music artists. He was born in 1981 and resides in Beijing. He began making electronic music in 2002. his music explores the relationship between sound and space. Tensions are interweaved with restrained emotions, and a sense of space running through the movement, can be felt - calm, solid, yet highly impressive.

Shao released a string of albums over the years, starting with his 2005 debut Mental Imagery. In 2015 he signed on as the first Chinese artists on legendary Berlin techno label Tresor, releasing his Doppler Shift Pt.1 EP that year and following up with a full album in October 2018. While he performs his live set in festivals across China mainland as well as at international festivals over 20 countries.

He is also a highly sought-after composer and sound designer. He was invited in 2011 by the Goethe Institute to re-compose the soundtrack for the classic German silent film Metropolis, and has an ongoing collaboration with Meng Jinghui, one of Asia’s most influential avant-garde theatre directors.

Undoubtedly one of the most revered names in techno, Rebekah boasts a string of notable releases on the likes of Mord, Soma, CLR and Elements, and has been highly regarded by the likes of Chris Liebing, Bas Mooy, Paula Temple, Perc and many more throughout the course of her career. She’s earned her respected reputation over recent years, with her relentlessly heavy sound winning her titles such as DJ Mag’s Best Producer in 2018, and featuring as their January cover star in 2019. She launched her highly successful live set in late 2018 which was named by Resident Advisor as one of the best performances of ADE 2018.

Brooklyn-based Chloé Lula appreciates the rawness and weirdness in music; something she translates into her exploits as a DJ, which sees her combing the far-reaching corners of industrial, EBM, techno and wave. 

As well as her own musical pursuits, she has a hand in keeping the cogs turning behind the scenes at several labels, including both her own Detour imprint launched in 2012 and the inimitable aufnahme + wiedergabe, for whom she spent time working as label manager back in Berlin. 

This year will see the release of several EPs worth of material she's been sitting on for a while, one being a debut on the aforementioned German label she has close ties with, and another a split EP alongside fellow producer and best pal Ireen Amnes.

We invited Chloé to take control of this week's Wednesday Alternative Mix, a moody and nostalgia-inducing mix of the raw, rumbling electronics that form the backbone of her DJ sets...

Andi Harriman is a writer and DJ living in New York City with an emphasis on all things dark and Eighties-centric. She is the author of the book Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace: The Worldwide Compendium of Postpunk and Goth in the 1980s and her writing has appeared in Red Bull Music Academy, Dazed, Village Voice, Noisey, Bandcamp Daily, Electronic Beats and LA Weekly, to name a few, while acting as contributing editor to Post-Punk.com.
