Here's yet another rehearsal track from the Bad Dawgs. This started as just a two-track recording for a reference copy, but silly me forgot to punch my vocal track into the two-track mix - so the vocal is an overdub. I also overdubbed the harmonica part to just "round it out" a bit. The Bad Dawgs are Chris "Po' Boy" Horn - guitar, harp, vocal; Steve Kail - Bass; Kenny Becker - Drums.

Gearhead notes - I was playing my GFS "Fat Mini" mini humbucker equipped Gibson Les Paul through a GFS Twin Overdrive, into my Holmes Pro Compact amp. The slide is one that I cut from the neck of a glass vinegar bottle. I miked the Holmes up with the venerable SM-57. The vocal and the harp (German-made Hohner) were both recorded with an AudioTechnica ATM41.  Steve was playing a G&L bass into my antique Road bass amp, Kenny was beating on my vintage Rogers kit.

Mexican Blackbird

A little "back story" on this song. Mark came to the studio a couple of weeks ago with a verse, a chorus, and a chord progression. After hearing it once, I sat down and scrawled out the second verse in about five minutes. This one hits this ol' Civil War buff right where he lives!
 We recorded the original tracks that night, and then spent another evening adding the overdubs. It's been a whole bunch of fun putting this one together. I think it's the most personal thing we've ever done as a band - the "drummer boy who died in Libby Prison" is a part of Mark's family tree, and I have a lot of reenactor and family connections to Lookout Mountain. The picture is Mark's great-something grandfather David Miller. One more little personal connection - the two banjo parts are "Cooley's Reel" and "The Temperance Reel". My ancestor Thomas Langdon was a private in the 24th Iowa Infantry - known as "The Temperance Brigade". Cool coincidence!
Gearhead notes - Farmer's Heads is Mark Dellinger - guitar, banjo, lead vocals; Kenny Becker - drums and backing vocals; Chris Horn - bass and backing vocals. The electric guitar tracks were played on Mark's "new" 1952 Gibson ES-125 through my Silverface Fender VibroChamp amplifier. The banjo was a cheapo 6-string that I've had for a couple of years. The acoustic guitar is my Taylor 314ce, direct to the console. I was playing my Fender Blacktop Jazz bass, also direct. Drums are vintage Rogers. Shure and Audio Technica microphones.
