Recently I was able to fulfill a long-held dream of mine and acquired an E-mu SP1200, a machine I've been looking for, both literally as well as 'sonically,' for years!
In the past, I've messed around a bit with this sampler while visiting friends, but never looked into it any further since I didn't have one and so not having one would bug me out even more.
I was able to purchase this unit in Le Mans, France on my way to a family vacation and thus, I had the machine, two boxes of disks, the manual, some jazz records and drum breaks that I've prerecorded at home, and some time to learn my way around it – at least a little bit.
The more intricate secrets and tricks are still unbeknownst to me, but I was able to compose some simple, loop-based beats. Each beat features individual samples and a specific drum kit.
For this video I've recorded the beats back home in my bedroom studio, mixing the audio from my phone (recording real audio while filming) with a one-take recording that I've mixed through a mixing board. On the board I've tracked the beats out, complementing some tracks with very basic effects (i.e. I've put some reverb on the snares and hats) and compressed the master. No further postproduction!
I have to thank INVHIDE and XPERT (of the Tru Comers) for letting me in on some of their work routines and for sharing their knowledge – this helped me a lot! I have to thank Laurent for selling me the machine and SAITO for sending me the ad! Much appreciated!
These beats are not finished works but merely rough sketches. If you like one in particular, just tell me! I would love some feedback!
