Sri Gur Panth Parkash was written by Bhai Rattan Singh Bhangu. He came from a famed Sikh family. When tasked by the British administration to compile a history of the Khalsa Panth, by chance General Sir David Octherlony met with Bhai Rattan Singh in Ludhiana in the early 1800s. As the grandson of the famous Sikh warriors Bhai Mehtab Singh (who killed Mussa Ranghar) and Bhai Sham Singh (who was a founding member of the Budha Dal), Bhai Rattan Singh had grown up with the history of the Khalsa Panth being told to him by the elder Sikhs who had lived through the 1700s. Having narrated this history to Octherlony’s deputy (Capt. Murray), Bhai Rattan Singh devoted the last part of his life to writing the history in the form of a Granth titled Sri Gur Panth Parkash. It was written in the Boonga of his grandfather in Amritsar. This history was accepted by the Panth and daily katha (narration and explanation) of this Granth is undertaken in the Budha Dal and Nihang Singh battalions today. This venture seeks to bring the Katha to English speaking audiences so that it remains accessible for future generations.

Sikhi became a newly emerging social and spiritual philosophy which gained traction with the people of Punjab.

ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰੋ ਬੈਰਾਗਰੋ ਮੈ ਜੇਹੀ ਘਣ ਚੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
O my Lord and Master, You are unattached; You have so many hand-maidens like me, Lord.

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਗਰੋ ਰਤਨਾਗਰੋ ਹਉ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
You are the ocean, the source of jewels; I do not know Your value, Lord.

ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਹਰੰਮਤਿ ਸਾਂਈ ॥
I do not know Your value; You are the wisest of all; please show Mercy unto me, O Lord.

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
Show Your Mercy, and bless me with such understanding, that I may meditate on You, twenty-four hours a day.

ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇਣ ਹੋਵੀਜੈ ਤਾ ਗਤਿ ਜੀਅਰੇ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
O soul, don't be so arrogant - become the dust of all, and you shall be saved.

ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੈ ਜੇਹੀ ਘਣ ਚੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥
Nanak's Lord is the Master of all; He has so many hand-maidens like me. ||1||

In this Katha the greatness and the glory of the Guru is described of how they are powerful in carrying us across the ocean of this world. Examples are given throughout history of how the Guru has saved the honour of their devotees throughout the ages.

The Katha was done at Gurdwara Nanaksar, Surrey in April 2016.
