La Rassa a Bute è un dramma in musica in lingua leccese di autore ignoto e risalente presumibilmente all’inizio del Settecento, di cui si conserva il testo ma non la musica originale. Un pregevole testo teatrale, appartenente a quel genere dell’opera buffa “napoletana” molto in voga  nel Salento settecentesco, per il quale sono in corso da anni ferventi studi accademici riguardanti la problematica linguistica.

I Khaossia, su consiglio di Alessandro Laporta, direttore della Biblioteca Provinciale di Lecce in cui è conservato il manoscritto originale, hanno voluto far rivivere l’opera attraverso questa produzione discografica, anteprima di una futura rappresentazione scenica nei teatri storici salentini.

Si è scelto di musicare alcune sezioni dell’opera, individuate come “arie”, e rievocare la tecnica del recitato e recitativo in altre. Lo stile compositivo ed esecutivo è sempre quello eterogeneo che contraddistingue i Khaossia: radici nella musica antica, nella world music e ovviamente in quella salentina. Le musiche sono state composte e arrangiate da Fabio Turchetti.

L’opera è stata presentata a Lecce presso il settecentesco Convitto Palmieri e negli USA all’America-Italy Society of Philadelphia.

La Rassa a Bute is a drama in music written in the dialect of Lecce. It was written by an unknown author and it probably dates to the beginning of the 18th Century. Although the text of the drama is preserved, the original music has been lost. It is a valuable piece of theatrical work, belonging to the “opera buffa” genre associated with Naples and particularly popular in the Salento region in the 18th Century. For many years, intense academic studies have focused on this text, trying to unlock the linguistic mystery. Khaossia, on the advice of Alessandro Laporta, director of Lecce’s Provincial Library where the original manuscript is kept, decided to breathe new life into this work through this musical production.  This is a preview of a theatre production to be performed in the historic theatres around the Salento peninsula in the future. We decided to write music to some sections of the opera, identified as “arie”, and to evoke the technique of the text in others.

The style of composition and execution is heterogeneous, which is a characteristic of Khaossia: with inspiration from ancient music, roots music, and the music of Salento. The music has been composed and arranged by Fabio Turchetti.

Il cd,  prodotto dal Consorzio Produttori Cremonesi in collaborazione con l’Associazione Culturale “Porta Marzia”, prende il nome De Migratione ed è un viaggio spazio-temporale che percorre le strade della migrazione di artisti meridionali ed in particolare di Ignatio Jerusalem, compositore leccese vissuto nel XVIII secolo e diventato uno dei più grandi artisti delle Americhe. Un cd di musica popolare meridionale, in particolare salentina, ma che omaggia Leonardo Leo e  Jerusalem, attraverso riferimenti alle loro musiche ritrovate negli archivi guatemaltechi dall'IMLA. Un  pensiero anche a tutti coloro che, come noi, sono dovuti emigrare per trovare in altri luoghi maggiore possibilità di realizzazione della propria vita. Il cd è stato patrocinato dall’Assessorato al Mediterraneo della Regione Puglia e dall'Assessorato alle Politiche Giovanili del Comune di Cremona..

DE MIGRATIONE

Innumerevoli migrazioni sono avvenute nei secoli e molte altre ancora ne dovranno venire. Interi popoli e singoli individui hanno lasciato i propri paesi d’origine portando con se tradizioni, usanze e simboli per legittimare la propria esistenza, per ricordare la provenienza, e che incrociandosi e sovrapponendosi hanno generato il variegato patrimonio culturale dell’umanità. Il destino sempre imprevedibile ha fatto il resto, come nel caso di Ignatio Jerusalem, partito da Lecce nei primi decenni del ‘700 con le pupille accese dall’entusiasmo e l’animo rischiarato dal ricordo dell’assolata terra natia.  La sua migrazione lo condusse fino a Città del Messico dove divenne Maestro di Cappella e trovò fama di grande compositore. A noi è toccata una sorte analoga a quella del giovane Ignatio. Abbiamo lasciato il Meridione alla ricerca di prospettive culturali differenti con cui confrontarci e di orizzonti conoscitivi più ampi per arricchirci, rinfrancati, talvolta inconsapevolmente, da quella solare semplicità delle nostre radici. Al nostro illustre conterraneo, e purtroppo tanto poco considerato nella sua terra natia quanto ammirato nel panorama musicale internazionale,  abbiamo voluto dedicare un tributo minimo, rivisitato dal Tempo, dal genere e dal nostro modo personale, certi che un animo lungimirante come il suo non se ne sarebbe certo avuto a male, anzi ne sarebbe stato piuttosto divertito.

IGNATIUS DOMINICUS JERUSALEM

Ignatio Jerusalem, di Lecce, ebbe a suo carico la più importante responsabilità musicale d'America coloniale, quella di essere il maestro di cappella della Cattedrale del Messico. Fu un apprezzato compositore di musica sacra e ben presto punto di riferimento per il panorama artistico dell’epoca. L’IMLA, diretta dal dott.Annibale Cetrangolo, ha ritrovato negli archivi della Curia Arcivescovile di Lecce l’atto di battesimo di Ignatius, Dominicus, Orontius, Joseph Pascali Jerusalem e ha potuto finalmente dare una datazione certa della sua nascita, il 3 giugno del 1707, e una terra natia, Lecce. Dagli stessi documenti si è potuto appurare come anche suo padre, Mattheo, fosse  un emigrante (da Napoli a Lecce) divenuto maestro di cappella presso la chiesa del Gesù di Lecce e stimato violista da gamba, precettore dei rampolli delle famiglie nobili salentine.  Albalonga ha registrato in prima mondiale per la TACTUS alcune delle composizioni di Ignatio  Jerusalem conservate negli archivi Latino-Americani.

Over the centuries innumerable migrations have been happened and many more will be occurred. Entire nations and single men had left their own native lands, bringing with them those folk traditions, customs and emblems to legitimate their own lives and record their originis, that, crossing and matching, had given birth to the multi-cultural heritage of the whole humanity. As the rest the for ever unforeseeable destiny came on stage, as in the fate of Ignatio Jerusalem, who left from Lecce in the first ten years of the XVIII century, with a burning enthusiasm in his eyes and the memory of his sunny homeland in his mind. His migration took him to Mexico City, where he became choirmaster and found the reputation of being a brilliant composer. It has been up to us a parallel lot to that of the young

Ignatio. We have left the South in search of different cultural views, which we could have faced with and in search of more broad cognitive horizons, which could have enriched us, once fortified, ofetn anawares, by the radiant innocence of our roots.

Ignatius Dominicus Jerusalem

Ignatius Dominicus Jerusalem from Lecce was Chapel Master in Mexico's cathedral, the most important musical rule in the colonial America. He was a clever composer of holy music and in a short time he became the main reference figure of the musical fields of the time. The IMLA, directed by Doc. Annibale Cetrangolo, found the baptsism certificate in the archives of the Archbishop's Bar of Lecce. It said Ignatius, Dominicus, Orontius, Joseph Pascali Jerusalem was born in Lecce, 3rd June 1707, finally. The same document said his father, Mattheo, was an emigrant (perhaps from Neaple or from Lecce), who, considered a famous viola da gamba player, became Chapel Master in Jesus's Church in Lecce and the teacher of the richest families' children of the same city. Thanks to TACTUS, Albalonga has recorded for the fist time all over the world, some of Ignatio Jerusalem's compositions, which were preserved in the Latin-American Archives.

The ensemble was born in 2005 in Cremona, in response to the desire of public and private bodies, as well as individuals with a passion for the southern folk genre, for a band representing the Salento region and its musical traditions in Lombardy. It comprises musicians who specialise in a number of genres, including ethnic and folk music from Salento in particular. Khaossia position themselves as a meeting point for different musical cultures, starting from a preference for Irish and Hellenic sounds. The curiosity towards the space is strengthened by the attention and respect towards the time, through the careful revival of ancient and sometimes forgotten sounds. The respect towards the culture and history of Salento forms the basis of Khaossia's approach to the region's folk music.


The ethno ensemble has received positive reviews from both critics (Froots, World Music Magazine, Folker!, Trade, Folkbulletin, Linea Trade, Blogfoolk, WFMU Radio, Radio Popolare, Radio Onda d'Urto) and the public, thanks to performances in Italy (The Night of the Tarantula 2005; Ponchielli Theatre in Cremona 2006; Appennino Folk Festival 2007, Isola Folk 2007), and abroad (Jelsa 2005, Paris 2006, Babel Med Music in Marseilles 2008, Gugghinsberg 2008, USA 2010, April and October 2012, 2013; Manila 2014; Londra 2014, Praga jan and jun 2015). In 2007 they published their first CD "De Migratione" on CPC label. In 2009, under the same label, they published "La rassa a bute", a musical drama from the early 8th century written by an anonymous author in the dialect of Lecce. The original musical script was lost, so Khaossia composed and recorded original music for it.

In 2010, Khaossia completed their first tour of the USA on the invitation of the General Consulate of Italy in Philadelphia, playing at the prestigious Art Museum of Philadelphia and at the "Fiorello Laguardia" Art School in New York, amongst others.

In 2011, Khaossia begun the production of "Le Grechesche", which was published in 2012 for the University of Salento, CNI and CPC.

Invited by the General Consulate of Italy in Philadelphia and sponsored by the Puglia and Lombardy Regional Councils as well as the University of Salento, they toured the US again in April and October 2012, performing in New York and Philadelphia. They performed their new material at the famous Saint Joseph University and other prestigious locations, enjoying a great amount of interest and recognition everywhere.
