PREMIERE: GMJ - Mood Medicine (Paul Kardos Remix) [Meanwhile Recordings]

In October 2020, GMJ released his debut solo EP on the Meanwhile imprint. “Mood Medicine” thus provided a tantalising glimpse into the Australian maestro’s musical soul with three original tracks of the highest order. Returning to the EP, a trio of remixes provides new insight courtesy of Paul Kardos, Sebastian Sellares and fellow label-head, Matter.

 

An artist with a rich array of music to his name, Paul Kardos has seen his work featured on such esteemed imprints as Balkan Connection, Soundteller Records and Darin Epsilon’s Perspectives Digital. Making his Meanwhile debut, the Hungarian artist impresses with a deep and powerful reworking of the title track. Intelligently making use of original components central to GMJ’s original, a glorious new melodic theme flows across “Mood Medicine” in sparkling fashion. Redolent in reverb and delay, sonic textures cascade across the left/right spectrum as new arpeggiated sequences and counterpoint phrases emerge in the third movement. A heavy beat and effervescent percussive groove add further to a powerful statement of intent from the Paul Kardos studio.

 

Fresh from the success of his “Dunes at Dawn” EP on Meanwhile, Sebastian Sellares has been at the vanguard of a fresh and modern progressive house sound since a debut for PHW Elements in 2018. Going on to see his music signed to UV, Or Two Strangers and Proton Music, his “Zen State” EP for the latter was a notable highlight in October 2020. Returning to Meanwhile, the Sebastian Sellares remix of “Precipice” oozes class as the familiar bouncing bassline and central melodic theme of the original envelope the listener. Building with ease, white-noise effects pulsate gently alongside a rolling groove and deep resonant kick as melodic sequences filter into sonic range, highlighted by a stripped back and spine-tingling breakdown.

 

Matty Doyle needs little introduction with his Matter production pseudonym. A regular across the finest underground dance imprints from Cid Inc.’s Replug to Roger Martinez’s Higher States and the renowned Balance Music, the Melbourne resident continues to dine at underground dance music’s top table with an inimitable blend of “deep synth lines, driving bass and pulsating rhythms”. November 2020 saw Matter debut on the Meanwhile imprint with his “Amanita” EP as he now returns to remix his friend, production partner and label co-owner. Reworking “Rite of Passage”, a trademark smorgasbord of rich and evocative soundscapes wash over the listener as glistening melodic lines flow enticingly atop. A chorus of effects pan the stereo spectrum in dizzying glory as themes inherent in GMJ’s original reveal themselves with ease. The result is another masterpiece of sonic seduction from the Matter studios.

Dutch artist Navar returns to the Canadian imprint following his 'Moments In Life EP' from November of 2014. As one of the underground's most creative talents Navar has shaped a sound all his own, full of soulful qualities and organic design. Appearances on Guy J's Lost & Found Records coupled with a sparse release schedule has only made the love for his sound stronger. Meanwhile Mononoid, also hailing from the Netherlands are making their much anticipated label debut. First conceptualized in  2011, Andy Godderis and Igor Shumlyanskiy make up the Mononoid production duo. A string of releases on Traum got their career off to a great start and their modern take on techno has since been showcased by Einmusika, Lost & Found and Sisyphon. Much like Navar, Mononoid has been praised for their creative vision and the fusion of  these three intuitive minds was a project that had to be put into motion. Some winter months locked away in the studio has resulted in the much anticipated three track EP entitled 'Dreambox',  alongside a remix from YokoO of Musik Gewinnt Freunde and All Day I Dream.

The release concludes with the appropriately titled 'Versoene'. A piece which was born out of musical frustration but resulted in a deep and magical vibe. The first of the three completed and the beginning of a strange and wonderful friendship. In the words of Eelko, Andy and Igor "An enthralling light came upon us and we knew what to do! There are hopeful transmissions running through this one, but where are they from? Moments of brightness with 'Versoene' brought diversity in many ways, it led us to a place of harmonic embrace, a moment where time was lifted and we moved forward into the future. "

The release begins with 'Ad Litem', which finds the trio crafting a tough yet soulful techno creation. Led by a mystical motif and broken percussion, it's rugged grooves and mysterious atmospheres take you on a thought provoking journey. There's a magical ending to the subversive moods and one which is worth exploring many times over; in the words of the guys "Ad Litem was a cosmic attraction between all of us, a unique energy stream with spiritual undertones, but for all of its energies there was something very profound waiting at the end; it was our carnival train ride to the guardians of Ad Litem."

Darin Epsilon's label Perspectives Digital returns for the fourth consecutive year with its massively popular ‘MMW & WMC Sampler'.  The 2017 edition continues the tradition of showcasing some of the finest talent in the industry.  

The first selection of the series is provided by DJ's Roma Rone and Igor Ri9or.  blaktone is a brand new music project from Saint-Petersburg and their music is a symbiosis of progressive and techno sounds.  Ri9or is no stranger to the electronic music scene with releases on labels such as Balkan Connection, Bonzai Progressive, Visceral, and Pangea Recordings.  blaktone's ‘Aurora' teases the listener with threads of atmospheric sweeps but quickly launches into commanding force with its dark and gnarly bassline.

Teaming up for the second selection is Hasan Mogol and Be Morais.  German producer Hasan Mogol has been creating an array of hypnotizing, crowd-pleasing sounds for over ten years.  Brazilian producer and co-owner of Not Another Music, Be Morais, is rapidly establishing himself as a respected artist with his steady stream of works on Stripped Recordings, Dear Deer, and Slideways.  Hasan and Be Morais' collaboration on ‘Awkward Dance' crafts an undeniably industrious and sinister vibe with its pounding kick, haunting bassline and grimy chords. 

Next up is Kamilo Sanclemente making his third appearance on the label. The Colombian producer maintains his masterful discography on imprints such as Einmusika, Baroque, and Mistique Music.  He's a staple on the Progressive House charts and a constant presence in Hernan Cattaneo's charts and ‘Resident' radio show.  Kamilo's offering titled ‘The White City' pushes the listener into a spellbinding state with its vigorous layers of percussion and eerie vocal samples.

Completing the series is Hungarian producer Paul Kardos.  Paul's impactful debut on Perspectives titled ‘The Other' was instrumental to the success of the ‘2016 ADE Sampler' last October.  Paul brings his signature blend of melodic techno and contemporary progressive house with his newest production. In ‘Ancient Astronaut', the dominating groove and whimsical chords continuously build, creating relentless tension that satisfies in the third act with a dramatic finish.

No stranger to the progressive community, Monojoke's productions can be found on well-revered imprints like JOOF Aura, Soundteller, Balkan Connection and ICONYC to name a few, while his collaborative project 'Fluente', together with Tuxedo, saw releases on Hernan Cattaneo's "Sudbeat Music" as well as Hot Since 82's "Knee Deep In Sound", with a new appearance on Nick Warren's "The Soundgarden". From his debut appearance on Juicebox Music via his remix of Subandrio's "Sigiriya" back in 2016 to his "Arterials" EP in 2017, we welcome Poland's very own - Monojoke, aka Jacek Gumbisz, back to the imprint with another peak-time 2-tracker EP, making his mark as one of our label's most esteemed artists. Both "Cold City" and "Superficial" feature his signature percussive-driven groove, driving basslines and larger-than-life atmospheric melodies, creating monstrous epic moments in sets. 

The sole remixer for this EP is Netherland's wonder-kid - Kasper Koman. Even though he's been producing for nearly over a decade, he recently burst into the scene with his fresh and unique style, highlighted by his releases on Guy Mantzur's "Plattenbank", Sonic Union's "Lowbit", Paul Hazendonk's "Manual Music" and more recently Mike Koglin and MoodFreak's "YOMO". His music transcends the traditional 'genre' expectations, providing a much-needed palette cleanser. Kasper's remix of Monojoke's "Cold City" is a masterclass testament to his technique - tight drums, a funk-inspired bassline, sprinkled cosmic effects while twisting and morphing the original parts to give a new life without losing sight of the dancefloor.

Joep Mencke, one of the happies campers of them all, and his soul-propelling masterpiece, Asiri, is the perfect piece of music to usher in the Spring. “Music takes me on a journey.
