Composer Francisco Guerrero was one of the great Spanish composers of his
generation, second only to Tomás Luis de Victoria. A prolific composer, Guerrero wrote at least a page of music every day of his life. Across his vast body of work, which includes both sacred and secular pieces, he captured a remarkable variety of moods in his music—ecstasy, despair, longing, joy, and devotional stillness.

Guerrero achieved great celebrity both in Spain and abroad, and his music remained popular for hundreds of years after his death, especially in cathedrals in Spain and Latin America. In the Spanish-American empire, his works were far better known than those of any of his contemporaries. While 17th-and 18th-century Italian composers tried, under orders from the Catholic authorities, to perpetuate the style of Palestrina, in the New World Guerrero's music continued to be sung as if it were new, probably because of its singable and memorable nature. Guerrero incorporated memorable diatonic lines in his compositions and employed a remarkable harmonic clarity rarely heard in the 1500s. Indeed, Guerrero’s use of harmony was so ahead of its time that a Magnificat discovered in an 18th-century Peruvian manuscript and first thought to be an anonymous 18th-century work turned out to be Guerrero’s Magnificat secundi toni, written two centuries earlier.

The eight-voice motet “Laudate Dominum de cælis” is a classic late-renaissance double-choir setting with text adapted from Psalms 148 and 150. The short answering phrases are sung alternatim between the groups, culminating in sonorous eight-part sections.
