Khruangbin are the Texas based three-piece that make psychedelic, acid jazz infused Thai funk music. Oh yes. Comprised of Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Johnson, the trio have supported Bonobo across his USA tour and even had a track included in his Late Night Tales mix last year.LNT's artist label Night Time Stories subsequently signed them up, with single 'A Calf Born In Winter' released 19th May and an album in the works. "This is our very first mix tape. As such, we wanted to draw on original inspirations to each of us individually in the band, as well as together. In this we pull on Acid Jazz, Gospel, Brazilian Funk and Psych, Thai & Japanese Pop/Rock, "farm rock", Dub, Funk, and R&B to hopefully create a mix that is varied in style yet cohesive in feel. With the full length, Return To The 37th Chamber dropping April 14th, El Michels Affair releases another flawless two sider to hold us over.

Side A’s cover of Tearz is as much an homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it is to the Wu-Tang Clan track.

The song starts as a glazed over cover of "After Laughter" with Shannon Wise of The Shacks singing Wendy Rene's timeless mantra. Halfway through, the mood dramatically shifts and the drums and organ that drive the original RZA sample, take over. A dubbed out Lee Fields taps in like only he can, and the song spirals into outer space.

Side B finds EMA dipping into the deeper side of the Wu catalog with Raekwon’s Verbal Intercourse. Mixing the grimy, gritty production aesthetic of the original with elements of dubbed out reggae, El Michels Affair once again pushes the definition of a “cover” and truly makes it a tune of their own.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hello, my name is Will aka Skinshape, I do old school sounding psychedelic-funky-souly-stoner-rock music... Or something like that. I'm working on my fourth album now. I also run a label called Horus Records, we do exclusively roots reggae. I'm also a record trader and collector. Living in London provides a lot of opportunities for record digging. I've been collecting for about 8 years... First reggae mostly, then moving into soul and funk, and now I'm more into African music.


2. 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

The 7" for some reason is a near-mythical thing. I don't know quite what it is about it... But something grabs me a lot more than an LP does. 7" Just feels like the coolest format, and I love the artwork on 7" records. If you're into certain genres, especially reggae, the 7" is really the only way to go! 


3. One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I've pulled out my favourite 7" singles, but then realised there are still way too many. I've worked it down to records that I can't really let go of, or that I'm just really into at the moment! It starts in the USA, then hops across the Atlantic to Africa (West to East), then hops back across to the Caribbean for a final blast of a few of my favourite reggae singles.
