This is only a test! In the left corner: the Pittsburgh LPG in lowpass gate mode, and in the right corner: the Make Noise MMG using the Strike input.

I wanted to compare the sounds of both these filters with their lowpass gate capabilities. Both sounds are patched the same way, Mutable Peaks envelopes triggering the ping/strike as well as the filter envelope. Sounds are provided by the square wave from an Intellijel Dixie. I twiddled the input amount of the filter envelopes a little.

Pittsburgh LPG vs. Make Noise MMG

The Make Noise MMG is one of my favorite filters/low pass gates. I recently discovered that a more recent revision of the filter exists, you can tell them apart by the resonance LED. The earlier versions are Pink and the newer revision has a Blue LED.

The resonance circuit was reworked in the revision to address some issues people were experiencing with the filter, something about how the resonance acted in low pass mode. Since I had the fortune of having both versions of this module in the studio I thought I would do a comparison to satisfy my own curiosity.

In this demo you will first hear the original MMG followed by the revised MMG. Resonance is set at 50% in the first demo and 75% in the second demo (you'll see how different the resonance response is between both versions). The MMG is being pinged by a complex envelope coming from the Double Andore, sound source is a Mutable Instruments Braids (but that doesn't matter much since we're listening to the resonance of the filter here).

You'll hear me progressively sweep the MMG from 0% to around 80% and then quickly back down to 0%.

Drive was set about 60% for both tests, the original MMG seems to be a little narrower while the revision has louder dynamics (despite the fact that the original went into crazy overdrive in both tests but the revision was relatively "quieter").

A little demonstration of the Roland SH-101 being setup to sound like a TB-303. I start with a simple square wave and go from left to right across the front panel changing the settings until I get a nice acidic sound going.

Quick jam sequencing with a KORG Electribe 2. Oscillator is MI Rings going into a few things with MI Clouds on the final output. A sketch of a larger idea I want to work on.

Quick live jam experiment, sussing out some rhythmic eurorack patterns with traditional techno elements. Voices we hear are Plaits and Erica Synths Pico Drum processed by Make Noise Mimeophon and MI Clouds. Also some number station samples from Radio Music.

Other drum sounds come from the KORG Electribe 2. Live mix coming from a Mackie 1202VLZ4, rounded out by some Lexicon reverb.
