ergot is a fungus that grows on tainted rye. 

In its natural form and in quantities it has killed hundreds of thousands of people over many centuries.

 In small doses, it has been used to speed up childbirth and stop bleeding after delivery as a folk medicine for generations

Arthur Stoll in the early to mid-1900s isolated the compounds in ergot

 and in a few years researchers had discovered that the active compounds in ergot all shared a common nucleus and that was called lysergic acid

this nigga albert hoffman developer a synthetic process to build the ergot compounds from their component chemicals (dr strange head ass)

using this method he recreated active ingredients to try and see if he could find anything that could have medical uses.

on his 25th combination he tried for the 25th time and did it with diethylamine and called it lsd-25

nothing happened and he quit the experiments but 5 years later he felt a sudden urge to try that specific one again. on april 16th, 1943 hoffman synthesized lsd and tripped

 " i did not discover LSD; LSD found and called me”
