This is a collection of female voices that influenced, inspired and intrigued me growing up…and a couple of words on it.

I remember thinking Lisa Stansfield had the funniest voice, I would try and emulate it before I knew anything about vocal technique and how amazing hers was.  I would practice the operatic chilling howl of Kate Bush and the Stevie Nicks growl. I'd also try and sound like Bruce Springsteen but that's a story for another time.…

I learned something from all these artists. Whether it was Stevie Nicks who could be so aggressive and yet so vulnerable at the same time (mind blowing) and whose songwriting was so acutely personal. Or Toni Braxton, whose elegant use of her lower register showed me that you didn't have to squeal through your higher register to be an interesting or sexy vocalist. Sade, I still today, practice mimicking her as a vocal exercise in control and clarity. Or Chaka Khan & Tina Turner, conversely, the masters of raw power. 

Or Kate Bush. Oh Kate… That otherworldly girl/woman whose exquisite twisting of imagery and vocal characterisations made her songs more than just music and lyrics. Who DOESN'T take on the character of the ghostly Cathy when they're singing along to Wuthering Heights? And the memory of her interpretive dancing, whispy like a willow bending in the breeze in that misty blurry video clip, still makes me want to get up and be Cathy at the window. She remains a haunting and untouchable presence for a songwriter.

Let's take a Ride On Time… ahem…The effect of the Black Box urban legend before the internet was properly invented, cannot be underestimated. Is the singer really not the singer? Is it true? That the girl in the video is a model? And it's not her voice? The story lingered, whispered about by kids who had an appetite for delicious pop scandal and an inkling to search out music myths, waiting waiting and hoping their mum would buy them SMASH HITS that week. The story delighted me as a kid, I remember seeing the singer from C & C Music Factory accept an award, she sang live into the mic in her acceptance speech and insinuated that unlike another act similar, she DID sing everything. What was she saying? Of course we know now that the voice in Ride On Time is that of singer Loleatta Holloway and the disco kids will especially nod their heads to that one. But back then, the whole myth of the story delighted me. It was the first time the dreamlike enigma of 'how songs are made' changed for me. Songs all of a sudden, it seemed, could be assembled from parts.

Then there's the legacy of Janet & Madonna, who changed the school oval from a pitch of slightly sandy turf to the set of a video clip (yes, video) It was so very cool to know choreographed routines to your pop songs, just like Janet & Madonna. It was cool to be as good at dancing as you were singing, just like Janet & Madonna. In fact, you should practice…and you should practice a lot! For a young dancer it meant hours of passionate recording and pausing of Video Smash Hits (yes, video) 

Staying up late watching Rage, maybe Heart Of Glass would come on, and there she was Debbie Harry, glowing, illuminated. Was she floating? I remember thinking Rapture was so funny before I was old enough to know it was cool. But it's Debbie Harry…  Rap about a man from mars eating cars? Sure, watch me make it effortless and cool. Ok. I still love repeating those words in that laid back Debbie Harry style and I chopped up my favourite parts from the rap in this mix. 

None of these experiences are entirely or astoundingly unique to me, but they were influential, and future shaping, and filled my world with dreams and fantasies that one day I might be as cool as these impossibly cool women. For a female artist in the middle of the process which back them seemed only to exist in a world far far away, it was a lot of fun to look back and remember.

PROLOGUE

Anoraks & Union Jacks is a mix tape of British songs that I love. It spans the late 60's to the late 2000's. It is not chronological. It is, like me, a veritable hotchpotch of genres and emotions and features little snippets of interviews with Blur, Oasis, Suede and The Beatles. 

My love of the British goes something like this. At 12 I discover The Beatles. I find them very funny and quite charming before I like their music. If you've never seen A Hard Day's Night, you are missing out. Seeing that black and white movie that encapsulated the mad euphoric fandom surrounding 4 young rockstars from Liverpool, who were cheeky, hilarious, intelligent, and wore very nice suits, was a defining moment in my life. It was the moment I became an active fan. Someone who doesn't just sit listening and mildly enjoying the music of one band/artist but becomes compelled to search for meaning in those songs, dig for the stories behind the band. And if the band that threw you into this heady obsession at 12 years old was The Beatles, then you had a wondrously large volume of back catalogue, biographies, scandals, stories, movies, protests, musical history to ravenously charge through. The Beatles started a life long romance with British boys and music. And then Britpop happened. If you didn't already have a preference for all things Anglo, it was hard not to fall under its swaggering veil. In the words of Liam Gallagher 'it was time for some real lads to get up there and take charge" and they did.

It is no secret I am an Oasis fan. And happily mocked for it. But you see, I learned to play guitar by pausing Oasis videos, and so I am indebted to them for life. I would put my fingers on the frets, the same as Noel, and repeated the process until I had learnt each song. It is due to Wonderwall, which had a profound effect on me (and most kids who bought a guitar after that) that I am a musician today. Learning to play a musical instrument with Noel Gallagher as my teacher was a special intimate experience, and one I cherish. I am still completely swept away by their grandiose anthems and Mancunian swagger. At Slane Castle in Dublin I sat atop a boys shoulders and sang Champagne Supernova with 80,000 other Oasis fans, and it was one of the most magical moments in my life.

Lets talk about the British Bermuda Triangle. In the 90's, if you liked Take that you were not allowed to like Oasis. If you liked Oasis, you should not really like Blur. If you liked all three it was a thrilling time. You see, Robbie (Williams…duh) became friends with Oasis, and this turned him into a very naughty boy, boozing and being a lad and such. Well! Didn't he just go and leave Take That after this influence! Take That fans have never forgiven Oasis. As for Blur and Oasis, their legendary rivalry and verbal fisticuffs in the British press absolutely consumed the era. It is STILL fascinating. Watch "Live Forever: The Rise And Fall Of Britpop" it is one of my favourite music documentaries but also gives you a really personal insight into the event. It DOES seem that Noel came off a little better than Damon. But Damon Albarn was always the sensitive thinker. And Noel, well, I feel bad for the kids today who will and are growing up with rockstars whose publicists and general fear of bad press renders them unable to make any statements as bullish, entertaining, tongue in check or ego-strokingly hilarious as the Gallaghers. They literally, do not care. And it is one of the reasons I love them so. Watch a Gallagher interview. ANY Gallagher interview. You won't regret it.

Anoraks & Union Jacks Mixtape contains ALOT of Britpop, but, as influences are the connective tissue of this thing we call music, it includes tracks before, after, and around it. It is a swirling tornado whose debris may drop upon a house at a whim, miss one and drop upon a another. 60's British Rock, Britpop and Madchester twists and whirls, dropping House on one house, and dropping shingly psychedelia on another.

Also, lest just be honest. British bands are just very cool. Jarvis Cocker is very cool. Liam Gallagher, frozen there with his tambourine behind is back singing 'soonsheyine'. Cool. Alex James bobbing under his perfect fringe? Cool. Or Damon Albarn. The tortured not-mockney-cockney, deliciously undone by it all, but who might well be one of the greatest song-writers of our time. The dude's cool.

You will know most, if not all of these songs. The point is not that they are rarities, the point it is that they are good and that I like them.

And once again, if you got to the end of this rambling prologue, thank you and please enjoy some of my favourite british songs I sang as a teenager.


Because, I wasn't angry enough to get Grunge...
