Heaven Junk once shined like a beacon of light. Sat in the center of a sprawling desolate plain known as The Barren, the structure was built out of desperation and a collective longing for something new. The haven was something meant to conjure a sense of hope, hope in a future that seemed nonexistent before.

The terra surrounding The Barren hadn't existed for sometime. It had been engulfed by the blistering threat that Heaven Junk was built to repel, a noxious sea of matter cascading across the earth, bound to encompass everything. The matter seemed destined to claim and engulf the planet like a virus.

Junk's populace had lost their ability to dream, to see potential in others and themselves before finding residence in the space. These abilities still waned in and out over time, a trend that drew collective concern. Members constantly found themselves just short of breakthroughs. Hope came in waves.

Seattle’s Kid Smpl has always been a student of dance music’s history, his ever-deepening catalogue showing off a keen understanding of over two decades of rave music. Snippets of jungle, garage and dubstep seem to flit in and out of Smpl’s past work, reconstitutions of classic sounds in a new context, often at a new tempo and with newfound emotional heft. On Response/Ascend, Smpl’s latest effort for Symbols and a proficient companion piece to February’s Precinct EP, Smpl moves beyond the confines of the UK hardcore continuum, drawing on everything from the hyper-melodic skip of contemporary dancehall to big room trance, all stuck together with a widescreen R&B sensibility.

And whereas Kid Smpl’s past work has elicited nostalgia and futurist yearnings, Response/Ascend is a record distinctly of our time, a heaving, ever-collapsing mass that distills big room and home listening sensibilities into one singular space. That space is filled by songs like “Repeat Balance” and “Display Ring” that seem to clatter and bang until it’s almost unbearable, shearing noise and Smpl’s signature tortured vocal manipulations building over a saccharine bed synth pads. Meanwhile on the brief but brilliant “Focus Ribbon”, beaming major chords accompany a twisted, meandering vocal, the track moving forward despite a near-total lack of percussion. As a whole, Response/Ascend oozes confidence; the confidence of a producer willing to match harsh sonics with beatific melodic work and, more so, an artist striving to enter untested waters.

Sharing a devotion to expansive, world building sound design and a focus on granular detail, Kid Smpl and Sangam have always had a certain kinship and in 2018, the duo joined forces for the Shadow Knight LP on Dream Catalogue. Now, they’re back with a collaboration/split release for the third edition of DISPLAY’s SOLO series, pushing forward into equally bleak and brash new territory across two collaborations and two solo tracks.

Dubbed Dwelling Descender, the pack exposes an improvisational edge to both producers’ work, juxtaposing intense riffs with horizontally-arranged, shadow-laden synth work. In turns isolating and searingly honest, the two solo tracks on Dwelling Descender, “Radiant Scrape” by Kid Smpl and “Wasting Away” by Sangam, provide the thematic backbone to the tape, indulging in the disintegrating environs introduced at the beginning of each composition.

Bookending the release, the title track and “Desolate Image” show off exuberant bursts of rhythm and idiosyncratic narrative progressions in what feels like a stab at a new mode for both artists, matching their cinematic skillsets with the ability to provide genuinely cataclysmic moments. Dwelling Descender expands out from the nucleus of Shadow Knight at an impressive rate, showing that the two artists provide a challenge to each other while working in tandem.
