Begin Again EP featuring Liam Doc Remix | Lava Lava

Up next on Glasgow's Sounds of Lava Lava is local producer Kieran Apter. He's the man at the helm of CB90 Dance Recordings, a label that's been home to the likes of Brain Dancing, Man Power and his own productions which touch on house, techno and acid. Now he brings a slice of the latter to SOLL with 'Begin Again', a hypnotic acid-driven cut carried along by raw, shuffling drum programming and a distorted vocal meditation, which is backed by a remix from another Scottish rising star, Liam Doc.

The third release for Sounds of Lava Lava is a Scottish affair with an Acid-tinged banger from rising star Kieran Apter and a thumping remix from Liam Doc.  Over the past year Kieran has hosted the likes of Anthony George Patrice, Brain Dancing, Man Power & Neil Flynn on his CB90 Dance Recordings and has been gaining acclaim for his forward-thinking and unique blend of House & Techno in his own productions.

Begin Again kicks straight into gear with shuffling drum programming and a brooding bass line.  Distorted meditation instructions ask you to begin again in this moment, lay your arms at your sides and take a few deep breaths before Kieran lays down a wicked Acid hook.  As the meditation draws you deeper into the track each new layer of the composition combines to create a mesmerising and tripped out cut which is bound to get any dance floor moving.

Liam Doc has been a staple of the Scottish dance scene as a DJ and producer for several years, gaining local legend status with residencies at RARE & Fly Club and clocking up releases on &Friends, Shall Not Fade, Huntleys + Palmers and Sulta Selects Silver Service as well as his own Eyeangle Records. On his Dub Mix Liam Doc shows his years of experience to create a thumping peak time club cut.  A punchy 4/4 beat leads into his chopped up take on the meditation instructions. Sub-heavy bass, bright pads, silky keys and euphoric breakdowns combine throughout the remix to make an undeniably ecstatic House groove.

Thanks to his impressive knowledge of house music and carefully curated DJ sets, Kieran Apter has risen through Edinburgh’s underground to become one of Scotland’s most exciting talents. Since founding esteemed club night, Tweak_, in 2015, where he warmed up for Mano Le Tough, Seth Troxler, Moodymann, San Proper, Fort Romeau, Dorisburg and more, he has since elevated his profile to play across landmark European venues such as Wire Club Leeds, Sisyphos Berlin and Night Tales in London. 

Raised in a musical household, with his father playing in various bands, Kieran’s early musical explorations ranged from rock to samba, and he developed a love for hip hop in his early teenage years. From a young age, Kieran would make the journey from his rural hometown of West Calder to Edinburgh, indulging himself in all the city had to offer, heading to raves and falling in love with dance music while still in school. After moving to the city when he was 18, he soon became a regular face on Edinburgh’s underground scene. 

It's this exposure to music that has given Kieran’s productions the sound that DJ Mag recently described as “warm, cosmic and deeply emotional”. He’s come a long way from his early ‘All I Want’ EP, that found its way into the sets of Dixon, Rampa, &ME and Andhim, and aired by both Pete Tong and B.Traits on their BBC Radio 1 shows. These days, Kieran’s output continues to grow, with high-profile gigs and an acclaimed Boiler Room for FLY Club at Cabaret Voltaire, as well as starting an independent record label showcasing his work and the work of various friends and artists who share the same love for quality underground dance music. His label, CB90 Dance Recordings, is a passion-driven project, inspired by youth culture and a deep-rooted heritage of dance music in Scotland. So far, releases include the likes of Man Power, Brain Dancing, Anthony Georges Patrice, as well as his own productions, which touch on house, techno and acid. 

Kieran’s ability to seamlessly flit between genres while offering profound and thoughtful components in each track make his records as suited to the dancefloor as solo listening. Consistently receiving DJ support from artists such as &ME, Butch, Theo Kottis, Konstantin Sibbold, Jennifer Cardini and Sean Johnston have meant his records soundtrack dancefloors at clubs like Panorama Bar, DC-10, and Subclub. 

In the last 18 months, Kieran’s music has gone on to receive multiple plays on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Scotland, becoming a regular feature and gaining support from the BBC Introducing programme. He holds residencies at both Crèche in London, run by Alexis Raphael, and Pleasure at Cabaret Voltaire alongside Theo Kottis, Alien Communications, IDA and more. He also opened the Boiler Room Stage at last year’s FLY OPEN AIR festival. 

With a busy release schedule taking us up to 2024, Kieran has set himself up well for an exciting future.
