7 Days of Household Labor reproduces sounds from the intimacy of some women’s daily lives in their homes with the purpose of amplifying a persistent reality today: the sexual division of labor within the domestic space. The installation is in a transit space, seeking to listen to essential labors that are scarcely recognized and that historically have been attributed to women.
 
Despite the changes in the global economy and in the work market, household labor continues to be conceived as women’s labor, whether paid or unpaid. As such, it is an intersectional phenomenon, considering the dimensions of gender, race, generation, and class. It is a demonstration of the inequality that remains alive and invisible in the private sphere, as a neglected and strong reality of global capitalism. 

The concept household requires for tasks that «hold» the intimate and safe space of the «house». In this sense, these labors require repetitive actions that split attention through multitasks that involve affective responses in the midst of loneliness, which many times implies losing self-care. A situation that is invisible to the observer’s senses, and where women’s anger and love often coexist.

This piece was made for the final exam of Communal Practice Seminar, in MA Sound Studies and Sonic Arts, UdK Berlin. February 2023.

It was shown as a sound installation, made with 7 speakers (so, there were 7 different tracks), representing the 7 days of the week. As we know, household labors implies the 7 days of the week, no rest. 
The speakers were placed on a staircase with different domestic objects hanging from the ceiling. 
This version is the conjunction of those 7 tracks, united in only one mono track for simultaneous reproduction. That's how it becomes a sound piece itself.

7 Days Of Household Labor

“Bésame mucho” is a symphony of kisses that captures the sonic intimacy of a long-distance romance. Based on a series of 175 Whatsapp voice notes exchanged between a couple from March 1 st to July 18th, 2023, this sound piece addresses kissing as a starting point.

The composition begins with an increased presence of the word «beso» and its variants, which is wrapped up with some sounds that evoke heartbeats and wet dialogue during the exchange of data on the internet. As time passes, the rhythm and intensity of the piece evolve into a sonic environment with fewer words and more kissing noises, reflecting the ebb and flow of their love and affection.

These simple yet profound exchanges create a rich narrative that draws the listener into the world of their affectionate devotion, reminding us of all the enduring power of love and the eloquence of kisses, even in the absence of physical presence. Can the sound of kisses bring us closer together, despite being thousands of miles apart?

“Bésame mucho” demonstrates that social media is a space that offers the possibility of building sonic intimacy and a sense of longing, giving people the opportunity to explore their bodies sonically.
