The latest offering from Belfast-raised London based boys Bicep comes in the form of the Dahlia EP. Returning home to their Feel My Bicep imprint, the Dahlia EP is a masterful follow on from their anthem on AUS Music, Just. i-D exclusively bring you the second track off the EP with Rays. Being inspired by some of the lads early morning sets at Panorama Bar, the track is another punchy number with the tumbling bass line building through vocal chops into a deep minor-key 2nd drop. Another Bicep delight set to do definite damage to dance floors both day and night.

PSYOP opens up an alternate reality where dance music is freed from the yoke of genre-based distinctions and is no longer tied to any dancefloor norms. By exploring different moods with smooth sailing and rough patches, It is an intense journey in the murky world of psychological mass conspiracy. This LP could very well be the soundtrack for an cutting-edge Orwellian sci-fi movie or an imagined futuristic venue where music and dance of a new kind are performed. Recognise is DJ Mag's new monthly mix series, introducing artists we love that are bursting onto the global electronic music scene.

This month, we speak to our favourite bent electro/warped jungle maniac, Textasy. The DJ/producer from Dallas has hewn a unique sound from surprising ingredients, pillaging dance music history and stealing the best bits from electro, breakbeat hardcore and acid techno to create an exultant and explosive mixture. 

His 'Off The Leash' EP for Natural Sciences contained a DJ Mag single of 2017 in 'Illusions Of The Mind', an emission of elastic body-popping electro funk with eerie synths and a diversion into spooky stalker thriller territory in its mid track bass swap, while 'Breakbeat Lizard' from 'Welcome To The Darkroom' on E-Beamz is a suitably sludgy acid cut with murky drums cutting through the miasma.

The name Textasy comes from his favourite Texan hardcore rave record by Nasa Project, on 1992's 'High Friends In Places' EP. But it also has a satisfying synergy with Dallas's Starck Club, known as one of the first dance spots in the US to embrace ecstasy use in the mid 1980s, prior to its being made illegal.

BIO:
Techno hit Japan hard in the early 90s, TAKAAKI ITOH was quickly impressed and intrigued with this new sound. The unique style of beats revealed the gateway to a new world of underground music in Japan - something he had never heard before. In 1994, Takaaki began to organize his own techno parties in his home of northern Japan.

By providing a fantastic lineup, his parties quickly became a success. In 1996, having decided that it was time to start making his own tracks, His Japanese style of techno was pure, unique and underground - nothing that had been heard before in Europe.

His reputation and popularity quickly spread all over the continent. He was becoming recognized as Japan's most underground and respected techno DJ.

As of 2001 he was getting offers to perform at large clubs and festivals all over Europe, like Awakenings, Berghain, Tresor. Promoters wanting him, party people loving him, Takaaki Itoh took the next step and started his own label Wols. Passion led to success and he became recognized as the top of the next generation of techno music.

Second Woman is the collaborative project featuring Turk Dietrich of Belong and Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv.

Josh and Turk have been friends for over 17 years, having met in New Orleans in the late ’90s through mutual friend and future collaborator, Charlie Cooper. The duo have been working on music together on and off since that time.

The concept of Second Woman began with the idea of taking tropes from footwork, dub, house, and techno, and twisting these ideas into something kaleidoscopically liberated from the grid.
Their work first materialized with two LP’s and an EP on John Elliott and Peter Rehberg’s Spectrum Spools.

Second Woman tweak the perception of time and space within the audio field into something ASMR-inducing and ultimately satisfying to listen to. Both Josh and Turk experience ASMR in response to certain rhythms and sounds, and effort was made to incorporate these triggers into the music, hopefully for other people to experience as well.

With Instant / Apart, Second Woman present their complete signature sound as well as a new, more measured dimension to their work.

Ryuji Takeuchi provides Instruments Of Discipline with an EP of noisy, hypnotic tracks, ranging from stomping, left-field techno to melancholic ambience; the EP’s title ‘One’s Sentiment’ provides a thoughtful angle to this at times cacophonous collection, for while they are bristling with noise there is something contemplative about the pieces, expressed in a way that suggests more than one thought trying to take life at the same moment, Ryuji seems to find space for conflicting voices both spatially and in terms of mood, the first three tracks, ‘Ambivalence’, ‘Sadness’ & ‘Sorrow’ seem to crawl with competing elements, synth lines drool over and meld with throbbing kick patterns, anxiety & excitement are tightly wound in focus as tracks build and develop, leaving the listener to navigate these abstract planes, intoxicated; while the final track ‘Regret’ is a compelling piece of noisy, ambient minimalism that allows for an austere pause after the eruption of the initial works. It becomes evident that Ryuji’s journey as a producer, through periods of hard-techno, deep-minimalism and the more abrasive ventures on HueHelix, has created a powerful and nuanced voice that is fully on display in ‘One’s Sentiment’.
