Following up on the success of their collaborations on both “El Cabrón” and “Papacito” singles, Italian Globalbeats masters Dj Farrapo & Carlo Maver have called for four renowned international producers to go for their own takes on the original songs. Hailing respectively from Argentina, Venezuela, Italy and Brazil; Intiche, Caribombo, Morru and Dj Sonorus have all managed to retain the original vibes of “El Cabrón” and “Papacito”, each one with his own latin electronics background.

AYA Records, imprint of the pioneering Latin American label, ZZK Records, transports listeners to Andean Amazonia with its first release, Respira, by Mateo Kingman. 

Kingman, 24, is a singer-songwriter of Ecuadorian Amazonian music that fuses traditional Latin American sounds with hip-hop, rock, and pop. Respira, his debut album, is an energy overload that sings of biodiversity, sketching natural landscapes of magic and water colors. It is infused with sounds guiding the listener from the jungle and to high mountains, between the tangle of trees and the meandering sound of the wind on the moors. 

Kingman's childhood was spent in Macas, a small town in the Amazon, where he was exposed to the cultural richness of the Shuar community and Amazonian mythologies. There his feet grew calloused on mountain grass, there he dove in the Amazonian rivers searching for ancient sounds of water devils. He walked narrow, muddy roads, hearing the cries of the wild, of the Amazonian nymphs, of the dense green. In this environment, Kingman began experimenting with the guitar, drums, and traditional instruments. He began exploring the universal nature of music, which ties the finite and small human condition, full of passions hard to understand, with the cosmic, the chaotic, and the infinite. 

After a brief interlude pursuing semi-professional sports (100 meter hurdles), Kingman moved to Quito in 2012 and launched his music career. Just a few short years later, he finds himself at the forefront of the Latin American music scene emerging out of Ecuador, both as a soloist and a member of the band EVHA. 

Respira exemplifies this sound, fusing electronic with organic and acoustic in order to create a musical oxymoron: chaotic harmony. Inspired by artists such as Simón Díaz, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Violeta Parra, Juaneco y Su Combo, Control Machete, Bomba Estereo, Sidestepper and Café Tacvba, the album combines samples and synthesizers, with organic sounds he records himself in rivers, forests, and mountains. Kingman's lyrics connect the concrete jungle with the past of four million years of human life historically tied to the natural world. His soundscapes are full of the spiritual energy of all that is good, of what makes us dance to scare away the demons. His fiery voice constantly stabs at the melodies, spilling out the verses with rap and timbres of traditional songs. 

With the swagger of Calle 13 and the groove of Manu Chao, Mateo Kingman is ready to show you his world. Respira is out on August 12 on AYA Records, and will be available everywhere.

A mediados del 2009 el FRENTE CUMBIERO invitó a Bogotá al legendario productor de dub Mad Professor, como parte del proyecto Incubator del British Council, con el objetivo de realizar un encuentro sonoro entre la cumbia y el dub. Durante 3 días y bajo la orientación de Mad Professor y su hijo Joe Ariwa, se grabaron en los estudios de la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Javeriana varios temas para ser tratados bajo la estética del dub. Además de grabar composiciones originales del FRENTE, parte importante del proyecto buscaba reunir a músicos claves de la escena bogotana a improvisar y crear juntos en estudio.

De esas improvisaciones salieron 3 composiciones colectivas, que se suman a 4 originales del FRENTE para un total de 7 temas que fueron remezclados con técnicas propias del dub por Mad Professor en su estudio ARIWA en Londres. El resultado de este disco, además de convertirse en uno de los primeros encuentros tangibles entre la cumbia y el dub, aporta un nuevo sonido colombiano al poderoso movimiento de cumbia continental.

“Macumbadaboa” unites the ancestral sounds of Grupo Bongar from Pernambuco, Brazil with the electronic and dub elements of Maga Bo, the American/Brazilian DJ/producer based in Rio de Janeiro.  The project includes the participation of various well known Pernambuco artists - Isaar, Cláudio Rabeca, Lia de Itamaracá e as Filhas do Baracho, Lu do Coco do Pneu, members from the Xambá terreiro, children from the local community as well as the Malian kora player Adama Keita.  The album explores many northeastern Brazilian rhythms such as coco, afoxé and maculelê as well as subtle elements of electronic and dub music.

The songs were recorded in an improvised studio set up by Maga Bo in the Memorial Severina Paraíso da Silva - Mãe Biu, in the terreiro of Xambá in Olinda.  The intention was to bring Grupo Bongar into a familiar atmosphere where Guitinho could compose music and lyrics on the spot, inspired by the history of the Xambá community which was represented by all of the photos, antiques and relics that surrounded them in the Memorial.  

“The lyrics emerged from observing the pieces that make up the Memorial.  The old photos, the utensiles used in the terreiro in the time of Mãe Biu, the old percussion instruments, the maps of Nigeria and Cameroon (where the Xambá folk originated) and the articles of clothing from that time.  Finally, everything that reminds us of our history and the history of our people,” explains Guitinho.  “The repertoire of this album brings traditional songs for the orixás and the entitiies of Jurema.  The original lyrics emerged in the moment, through my observation of the pieces in the Memorial, during the recording.” - Marileide Alves
