The inspiration for the set was the idea of being ready for Love. This is intended to take you on the journey from the initial primal rumblings of the body when we’re attracted to a person. It will then take us through the dating process and finally to claiming our person as a committed partner and eventually cherishing the specialness of the love we share.

My song choices were also based on my audience. I was lucky enough to play for my two besties Kimmy and Ryan. They are my biggest support team, cheerleaders and dance party instigators !!! I wanted to play songs that I knew they would love to dance to. And I think I succeeded. It was so much fun. 

I made handwritten notes for each transition and queued entry an exit points for all songs in the software. It was the first time I used a loop to start a song which is what Tasha showed us in her demo last week. And it worked really well.

 While I was playing. I shifted my attention from the feelings I was experiencing in my body and also outward at the dancers and at the whole scene in general. I took it all in and I also practiced holding the room with my presence.  I was aware that when I was checking my notes and preparing the transitions that it would take my attention away from the room. I made sure to shift back outwards.   Once each set of songs were blended, I danced behind the decks and also with the dancers. It was amazing!!. I enjoyed it so much.

The last time I went to a real nightclub in a big city was probably in the early 90s in San Francisco.  So I got to really use my imagination with this one. When I thought about the songs I would build my set with, I turned instinctively to Latin House and Afro House. I also considered that I was the second DJ and there would be other DJs after me so I didn’t wanna start too low or end too low. And it’s the same time I know I needed a 20 BPM jump. Once I started digging for these types of songs, I was really enjoying myself. 

This week I was really challenged as to where the songs fit in the score. Was a song 3 or was it a 5? I tried my best. Also I was traveling and recorded the set in a hotel room without speakers and did everything in my headphones, which was interesting. 

My focus this week was really to create the third song in between two songs. And I think I did that successfully on a number of tracks. I recorded this set twice because the first time I made so many fucking mistakes that I just couldn’t stand it. I was getting tripped up on saved loops and forgetting how to activate them and deactivate them. I am now crystal clear on how to do it so it was a good learning experience.  And then in the end, when my second recording was done, I realized it was only an hour and seven minutes.  I really underestimated the amount of songs I would need -especially when you’re blending songs for extended periods of time.  lesson learned.  I'm not super proud of this set, but I'm proud that I did it.

As I put this set together, I imagined songs that would capture the feeling and the essence of looking for that special someone. I chose songs that represented the different flavors that one may experience as they explore the world and sort through potential partners.  I also paid homage to a few classic dance songs that were popular in my late teens and early 20s when I was experiencing this for the first time. I’m currently in a place in my life where I am on the threshold of the dating scene again. It’s a jungle out there, but ultimately I have hope that what is for me will find me. 

I was really challenged this week with finding the right songs to get the flow that I was looking for. I rearranged the music up until the last minute. I only just did the final recording before class, but I enjoyed the challenge and I’m seeing now that my skills are improving for when I’m trying to troubleshoot. during this mix, I experimented more with creating a third song between songs. I also finally started using the filter for transitions. I don’t think I nailed the 3 to 4 transition as well as I could.  And I think I might should have reversed the last two songs? (And yes, that is the way I talk).

I performed my ritual every time that I practiced and recorded. I sprayed my essential oil mist and lit a candle. I Also acknowledged my ancestors before I started.

This week I focused on scoring my entire music library. I probably scored about 300 songs. It was so much easier than it was when we first started.✨✨. Then in preparation for recording, I created seven smart playlists based on score number.  I performed my pre-recording ritual. And then I hit record.  

OMG this was so much fun. At first I was like a speed demon just skipping through songs just trying to fit as many as possible.   then I realized I could also try and make it sound halfway decent lol .  So then I started letting the songs play just a little bit. I stayed conscious of my time limit and I hit SCORE #4 at about minute 28. And then I realized I only had 15 minutes to take people down for a soft landing, so I tried my best. I ONLY did 21 songs!!!!! I can’t wait to listen to this to see how shitty or fabulous it is.

From doing this exercise, I learned how fun it can be to DJ on the fly and just create in the moment. That was a mind blowing realization. And after listening to the a couple of times I realized I had scored a couple of songs wrong. I realized this because they sounded out of place in the mix. I’m gonna RE-SCORE them.  This has been an extremely useful assignment and I plan to do this regularly for practice.
