Fantasy

Fantasy is about Kim longing for her parent’s love during hardships. Kim left her family and moved from Taiwan to Australia in 2012. Her family is a typical Taiwanese family that never really expressed love in a physical or verbal way. This was compounded when Kim travelled around the world, moved overseas, and again with COVID-19.  

In the song, Kim sings 'So I start to dance to keep your gaze on me, never want to let go of you'. This line is a statement that while Kim’s music career may seem to be flourishing, she still feels lonely and empty without the encouragement from her family. Kim’s evocative lyrics and emotive vocals combine with bird songs, sombre cello, and dreamy keys to create a vulnerable soundscape that yearns for attention from her listeners.

This is another weekly writing... a casual song with simple recording

Background story: 
I temporarily moved from Canberra to Beijing, China 3 weeks ago with my husband and I can't believe how dry and cold it is here. My heels are so dry and cracked which hurts a lot, my skin just can't cope. Where I live has central A/C on 24/7, I can't turn it off so it is just dry dry dry, I have to constantly get up to drink water. 

So what can I do?

In China, people love using TaoBao, which is equivalent to eBay. My phone gets notifications all the time from TaoBao so I had to check what I need for this crazy winter. Humidifier is the perfect solution, well, I had to be scrolling for hours to find a suitable one. Hooray, now I can breathe and sleep. 

Next thing I need is loads and loads of moisturising cream....

“All Good When I’m With You” sets the tone for “Turn On The Lights”, a debut album that explores Kim’s journey from self-doubt, to self-discovery, to self-acceptance. The atmospheric and introspective songs capture stories about identity, neurodivergence, and the immigrant experience. The project features international collaborations with Katie Wighton (AUS), Cara Hammond (UK), and Tennyson King (CAN), and is distributed by WIND Music (Taiwan) and Symphonic (USA).

Kim Yang is a Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter whose indie-folk sound blends emotional depth with ethereal vocals and heartfelt storytelling. Exploring themes of love, loss, and identity, her music connects deeply across cultures. Beginning her career in Canberra, Kim released two EPs — Ocean of Mind (2019) and Brave (2021) — with national airplay and acclaim for her bushfire tribute “Garden of Eden.” She has supported artists like Josh Pyke, Ben Lee, and Kate Ceberano, and earned nominations for MusicACT Artist of the Year and Best Live Voice.

Originally from Taipei, Kim now performs internationally, gracing stages at major festivals in Australia, the UK, Canada, and Taiwan. Her upcoming debut album Turn On The Lights, produced by ARIA-winner Louis Montgomery, traces a journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance through bilingual songs layered with piano, synths, and strings. The first single, All Good When I’m With You, releases in October 2025.
