This month on 'A Geography of Colour' I'm talking with painter Rema Ghuloum about her relationship with colour.

Rema is a contemporary American painter who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. 

She makes vibrant abstract paintings that have many layers, built up and sanded down to reveal their archaeologies. 

Earlier this year Rema had her second solo show 4 is a Rainbow Line at Et al, a gallery in San Francisco. The gallery described her work as being  ’an index of colour - woven, translucent layers singing with and through each other; spectral stratum, a chorus of colour. Rema’s work is heart-felt, joyous, devotional. The paintings sing.’

She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from California State University, Long Beach in 2007 and her MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2010. Rema has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of multiple grants including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, Davyd Whaley Foundation Artist-Teacher Grant, and the Esalen Pacifica Prize. Rema’s work has been reviewed in Art Forum, Hyperallergic, CARLA, the Los Angeles Times, Fabrik, among others.

Oren Ambarchi 'Quixotism Part 5' (eMEGO 202)

This is a recording from my live performance for the Sluice Biennial in Colchester June 2024 at Two Brews, in collaboration with Basement Arts Project. 

The piece originates from a participatory drawing and sound mapping project that I facilitated as part of a virtual artist residency at Basement Arts Project. Participants were invited to make drawings of their sonic environment, closing eyes, tuning into the textures and rhythms of everyday sound, and translating that into marks on paper. They also made audio recordings in the same location they made the drawing.

I made a digital collage (map) with the drawings, and used the audio clips as samples to make an accompanying audio collage, designed to navigate an imaginary sonic journey using the map. (You can see this via the link to my website below)

Subsequently, I have created this live version as a reworking of the original piece. The piece is made entirely from the audio clips submitted by participants in the project.  It's a non-linear narrative about a place that exists in your own imagination.

Jay Carder's unique blend of UK techno, left-field bass and breaks is unhindered by genre. She steps up for our IWD2025 campaign with an exclsuvie premiere of her track "At 9", which delves into dark jungle breaks and iconic pad sounds. 

"I was faffing around procrastinating (as per usual) on Ableton when I came across this amazing pad sound. It felt reminiscent of so many of my favourite jungle tracks, so I thought why not try and make a tune with it at 160bpm...feeling inspired, before I knew it the track fell together and 'At 9' was born. It's mostly sample-based, with a signature rolling bass and incremental glitches that are intrinsic to the 'Jay Carder' sound. I'm looking forward to hearing this one out in the wild for sure! "

Visitors to the exhibition had their voices recorded (in the living room) as they arrived at BasementArtsProject. Their voices where then added one by one to a loop that was played through a speaker in the basement for the duration of the exhibition.

To The Lost Years

“Ambient/experimental music is a free space where anything can be drawn” 

Melancholic story-telling from Italian producer Matteo Manzini, in which he creates music as a form of healing and personal dialogue. This volume consists of 5 compositions made in the Summer of 2019, and catalogues a series of intimate reflections in the moment. 

Solemn movements across the keys open poetically before the bewildering sparseness of hiss, fuzz, and drone distorts the space around. What has been captured here was recorded with the intention to be revisited at uncertain points in the future - as the definition fades and the lines get softer, our own retro-inspection is an act of time-travel in itself. Entwined with our ever-changing life circumstances, music as a form of journal can bring us deeper into various aspects of ourselves. It is the faithful companion to our personal evolution and resolution of the spirit.
