THE LOOKING GLASS – Worlds Reflected, Worlds Beyond…

We've welcomed aliens and travellers from distant planets, and we've danced as creatures from the deep. 2017 will be a year of transformation and magic, as I invite you to step through the Looking Glass with me and enter of new dimensions, a world in which the rules of reality are suspended, the world of Kimberfest.

Looking glasses appear on dressing tables, at funfairs and in the hands of mermaids. Many that appear in folklore and fairytales have magical properties, such as those in Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast. Not all mirrors are made of glass - Perseus was only able to slay the Medusa by looking at her reflection in his shield, while Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Draw your inspirations from art, literature, folklore, fantasy and science. Think reflection, parallels and symmetry, beauty and admiration, self-portraits, mirrors, replicas, clones and twins. In science, telescopes and lasers rely on mirrors; in language, palindromes are words or phrases that read the same forwards as they do backwards, such as Anna, Bob, racecar, radar, rotor…. The looking glass can be one-way, or multi-way, flat, concave, convex or a spherical mirrorball. Acoustic mirrors reflect sound, while smoke and mirrors implies trickery, temptation, illusion and magic. And of course there is Alice, whose wonderland we shall visit, home also to The Hatter, the March Hare, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum, Tweedledee, the Walrus, and the Carpenter, to name but a few. 

So what does The Looking Glass mean to you? What reflections will you see in it? Where will the portal lead you?

Kimberfest 2018 - We Are The Robots

THE LUNAR LANDING

On July 20th, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on the Moon. They returned to Earth on 24th July, having spent 8 days in space. 

On the 20th July, 2019, we too, will travel to the Moon. In dedication to the 50th anniversary of the lunar landings, Kimber's grounds will be transformed into an alien moonscape, covered in boulders and craters and sprinkles of moon dust. Having journeyed into the cosmos, we will explore unfamiliar lands, cycling and phasing from day to night, while piloted by our incredible DJs, who will send us leaping and floating across the dance floor, touching down every now and again for mouth-watering rations of food, before launching us back into space. 

Prepare yourselves, dear Earthlings, for the Moon is the only place other than our home planet where humans have dared to leap. We will enter a kaleidoscopic age of space exploration, where we will befriend alien lifeforms under the laser beams, enchant the lunatics and empower the tides. You will meet many people along the way, from Russian cosmonauts and Chief Designers, to Professor Calculus, and even the beloved Little Prince. You may even encounter the Man in the Moon, the landed Eagle, or be the crescent itself. Thankfully, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, defines the Moon and all outer space as the "province of all mankind" thereby restricting the use of the Moon to peaceful purposes only. 

Whatever your interpretation, you will bring light, delight, sounds, movement, love and energy to Kimberfest.

It would be safe to say we all went through the looking glass and found magic on the other side.

A 30 min compilation of space sounds recorded by Nasa mixed with sci-fi cinema soundtracks and ambient starship sounds.

The mission audio is air-to-ground communications between the astronauts and mission control, taken from the NASA archives. It spans all 9 days of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon, from launch on July 16th, 1969 to splashdown on July 24th. 

Played at Kimberfest - The Lunar Landing, on Saturday 21 July 2019, exactly 50 years after Man first landed on the Moon.
