거대한 유리 새장 속에서 새들은 자유로워 보인다. 새가 비행한 궤적이 공중에 보이지 않는 실선을 남기고 있었다. 서로의 궤적을 교차하는 새들이 빠르게 실선을 통과할 때, 음표가 오선을 스치듯 새소리가 울려 퍼진다. 너는 노랫소리처럼 들리는 꿈속 새들의 울음소리를 기억한다. 이 소리를 꿈 밖으로 가져가도 새들은 여전히 살아 있을까? 유리 새장은 너무나 투명해 보이지 않고, 단지 실선의 소용돌이에 휘말린 새들에 의해 반복적으로 연역될 수 있을 뿐이다. 새들은 너무나 투명해 보이지 않고, 단지 희미해지는 새소리로 말미암아 세상 어딘가에 음악이 있다는 것을 알려준다. 깜빡이는 음표의 잔상을 남기며 여러 겹의 실선을 가로지르는 새들은 거의 자유로워 보인다. 너는 가장 복잡한 연산의 한가운데에 놓인 단 하나의 질서를 기억한다. 꿈속의 유리 새장은 음악처럼 눈에 보이지 않지만 그 안에는 네가 기억하는 모든 새들이 날아다니고 있었다. 이 꿈을 유리 새장 안에 넣을 수는 없을까?

You remember this glass cage from the dream.

In this vast glass cage, birds seem to be flying free. As they fly, they make invisible paths across the air. As the birds cross each other’s paths and swiftly pass between the lines, sound of birds resonate like notes floating on a manuscript. You remember this sound of birds that rings in your head like a song. Would the birds still be alive if their sounds are taken out from the dream? The glass cage is transparent and cannot be seen; its existence can only be deduced from the repetitive movement of birds caught in the torrents of lines. The birds are transparent and cannot be found; only the fading sound of birds gives you a hint that there is music somewhere in this world. Passing across multiple layers of lines while leaving traces of blinking notes, the birds almost seem to be flying free. You remember one certainty that stands in the middle of the most complex equations. That the glass cage from the dream cannot be seen, just like music, but inside the cage, there were birds from your memory that keeps flying around. Can this dream be locked in the glass cage?

Japanese artist King Rambo Sound releases his newest EP, Strange Reality, on Chinabot

Sendai-based musician King Rambo Sound is releasing his first EP on Chinabot. Strange Reality (Japanese: 奇妙な現実) is an extroverted record: crunchy, repetitive beats and heavy basslines conjure up the sweaty hedonism of the club, tempered with an off-kilter sense of humour.

King Rambo Sound is influenced by reggae and dub - his name is a homage to reggae producers such as King Tubby and King Jammy - as much as techno and no-wave. Recorded with analogue Moog, Pioneer and Roland synthesisers, Strange Reality retains a full, organic sound. In King Rambo’s hands, dirty acid and funky minimal get a contemporary, energetic makeover.

"The world I see is very strange and sometimes grotesque," King Rambo says. "I am attracted to these elements. The daily record of these influences is in my music and living reality." While the grimy, repetitive meshes of minimal synths in Strange Reality explore the gritty undersides of experience, overall, his record energetically embraces even the strangest of realities we now find ourselves in.


About King Rambo
King Rambo Sound is a musician and DJ based in Sendai, the major Japanese city hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. He is part of the Aoba Nu Noise DJ collective which play regular shows in Sendai. He counts the internet, video games, sauna meditation and post-apocalyptic fiction among his biggest influences. He has previously released albums under the labels Unknown Precept and A2 Production.

Yeong Die is an artist residing in South Korea that got into music after commencing her study of piano at age 6. In the following years she was influenced by Chopin and Beethoven, K-Pop, Bill Evans and Brad Mehldau, Aphex Twin and the Boards of Canada, Bjork, Erykah Badu and DJ 威力. “Studying jazz from an early age made me want to make music that understood the concept of ‘improvisation’. I started producing with minimal equipment, using only Master Keyboard, MacBook, and Logic X... ”. In 2018 she dropped her debut self album “PIZZAPI” and began her journey as a DJ, producer, and sound designer - collaborating predominantly with video media.

Ahead of what would be the strangest year in living history, on January 1, 2020, Yeong Die quit her job and purchased her first synthesizer - a Korg Minilogue. She began working on music at 9am, every morning for three months. The resulting tempest of sound and ideas would be developed further over a total of 7 months from the start of the project, completion being the full length “Threshold Value” - a ten track odyssey of noise and textures and heavy concept clashes skipping between Ambient, Industrial, Manipulated Audio Media, Music and Non-Music Sound. Pieces like “Nool the Que” announce themselves like a love story involving telephone modems giving birth to a dystopian neon future. “Anywhere is Fine” can be heard at home bouncing around the confines of a basement fight club. The 10 minute “Worstward Ho” or “Much O O” could derive from a modern Music for Airports, albeit a 2020 version minus the hustle and bustle, echoes from a place both desolate and tense. 

In Yeong Die’s own words: “The theme of “Threshold Value” is embodied in the title songs ‘Anywhere is Fine’ and ‘Worstward Ho’. I focused on the sense of bearing and pain that I can never get used to. Holding, or not holding up are completely different, but I think the distance between these is very close. “Threshold Value” was the work of finding the space as close as possible between patience and explosion.”
