“This is the first song with lyrics we’ve ever written. We never really thought of ourselves as having a “singer” but we knew that we wanted a voice for Khruangbin. We decided to write about something close to us, tell a story as simply as possible, and sing it together.”

Khruangbin is a three-piece band from Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Johnson on drums. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. Khruangbin's exotic, individual sound is captured at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. Debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is scheduled for release at the end of this year.

This is a song I produced for the short film Washing Machine Blues, and it is a cover of the RnB piece by Malia - Sweetwater. I wanted to approach the track as far as possible from the original, giving it a new flavour. In the film, this track occurs when the main character, Layla, is alone in her father's Launderette and sings along to the radio.

PS: This is an extract from the film, hence the mixing style, with quite upfront vocals. I normally tend to bring the instrumental a bit more in line with the vocals.
