a song that takes inspiration from a meteorite i saw and some words from Kurt Vonnegut.


this piece takes inspiration from three different sources. the first being some lines in the introduction of a Kurt Vonnegut book. it’s hard to know if he was talking about reality, as he often blended sci-fi with anecdotes. but in this case, he was flying with his brother (a meteorologist) and he had with him a device that allows you to look into the clouds and see lightning that is occurring in daylight (not normally visible). as clouds bump into each other, they’re constantly charging and discharging electricity. Kurt Vonnegut referred to this device as an ‘electric eye’ - i liked the sound of the words and the idea of peering into a natural phenomenon that isn’t usually visible (but is always present).

the second inspiration comes from seeing a very interesting meteorite. we were out with friends at a party in the hills, and a meteorite tore through the night sky - i’ve never seen one quite like it. as it ripped through the atmosphere it burnt up into a blue/green streak across the sky. 

and the third bit of inspiration is the general resurgence of interest in UFOs in these days…. 

the overall idea of the lyrics/thought-process; how would it be if you saw something really peculiar in the sky, while you were out having fun with friends. would you believe your own senses?


i felt all of the above gelled nicely with the electric vibe of the Kawaii synth sounds... and so a song was born!

It had been about 8 or 9 years since I’d last done any kind of live-set for an audience, and months since I’d played for anyone… but this happened, and it was fun. I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for it or rehearse, so it could be a bit smoother in places, but I had fun and it was well received. 

A lot if it was put together specifically for the set, from ideas and jams of the last few months. And one track is very old, and a few more are quite new. The last one isn’t live at all, it’s taken directly from the Purple Hex EP (I needed something to round out the end of the set, and I wanted to hear it up loud on a big system, after months of indoors on smaller systems).


So there you go! i’ll throw some ‘director’s comments’ above for your amusement/apathy.

DAST 2020 Live-Set

Electronic sounds with a human touch... Kindred Sol is a project based equally on reflection and escapism, using the world around as inspiration, as well as the inner world of the imagination.


In all likelihood, somewhere far out in outer space, there’s a sun similar to ours, orbited by a planet similar to ours. Over tens of thousands of years, perhaps this planet has also been moulded by humanoids - just like ours… If so, hopefully they’re doing a better job of respecting the planet and fellow lifeforms - including each other - than we are here.

Kindred Sol is a project that reflects on our world and our condition (and conditioning). It is a project based on the idea that humans are capable of greatness, especially when working together, but also a project influenced by frustration at the position we find ourselves in, a position where it seems the future is rushing in at us much faster than we are moving forward to accept it.

Part of what I am trying to achieve is music that either considers - or does its best to escape - the power of opposable thumbs (thumbs that can manipulate and exploit, create and destroy). Though the individual sounds are shaped from the pulse of electricity and the arrangement of 1s & 0s, the underlying tone is human in character - and the final output aims to be something as unique and as imperfect as each of us.
